Norway March 2016: Outlander up to #2 in electric and hybrid market

The Norwegian new car market is down 2% year-on-year in March to 13.875 registrations, however a strong start of the year keeps the first quarter result in positive at +5% to 37.088 sales. Volkswagen is untouchable at #1 with 16.1% market share (-2%) above Toyota (+2%) and Nissan (+5%). BMW soars 19% to 4th place overall and ranks third so far in 2016 (+41%) while Mitsubishi more than doubles its sales year-on-year at +121% to 5th position. Mercedes (+66%), Mazda (+41%) and Renault (+53%) also shine, whereas Tesla (-57%), Land Rover (-58%), Subaru (-43%) and Honda (-33%) suffer. Model-wise, the VW Golf is stable above 10% share thanks to 1.414 sales, 38% of which come from the e-Golf electric variant. The Mitsubishi Outlander shoots up 262% year-on-year to 2nd place with 739 sales and 5.3% share, 93% being the PHEV variant. The all-electric Nissan Leaf rounds up the podium with 676 deliveries (+29%) ahead of the Toyota Auris at 507 (96% are the hybrid version) and the all-electric Tesla Model S at 487 units (-57%). Add the Toyota Yaris at #7 (94% hybrid), the RAV4 at #8 (93% hybrid) and the all-electric Renault Zoe at #9 (291 sales) to paint the picture of a Norwegian market completely dominated by eco-friendly cars – boosted in that by generous government incentives.
