The Danish new car market extends its incredible run to five consecutive record years and 2015 is just a little bit more special: it is the first time in the history of automobile in Denmark that over 200.000 new cars found a buyer in a single year, signing a 6th straight year of growth at +10% to 207.717 units. One element that is giving more wind to the market is leasing, with the share of private leasing simply and astonishingly doubling from just 12% in 2013 to 24% this year – and counter-intuitively, many in smaller segments according to Bilimp.dk.

Volkswagen and Peugeot remain the two favourite brands in Denmark but the French carmaker is catching up very fast: up 15% to 21.056 and 10.1% share vs. 22.499 and 10.8% (-2%) for VW. Toyota (+12%) is up two spots to #3, overtaking Ford (-12%) and Skoda (+1%). Mercedes (+26%), BMW (+27%), Suzuki (+33%), Opel (+42%) and Mitsubishi (+108%) are the biggest gainers in the Top 20. Tesla creates the surprise in Denmark this year with sales up 6-fold on 2014 to #21 and 2.736 units, including 1.248 in December when the Model S became the very first electric car to lead the models charts outright, driven by the prospect of electric cars no longer being tax-exempt from January 2016.

The VW Up holds onto the pole position for the 4th year in a row by the skin of its teeth and despite sales down 21%: only 9 units separate it from the Peugeot 208 up 39% to 7.946 vs. 7.955. The Toyota Aygo is up 7% and one spot to #3 while the Peugeot 108 is up 87% to #4 and the Peugeot 308 up 89% to #5. Other great performers include the Skoda Fabia up 98% to #15, the Opel Corsa up 52% to #14 and the Hyundai i10 up 30% to #16.
