The Bulgarian new car market is up a splendid 14% year-on-year to 29.675 registrations, with Dacia holding on to the brands top spot thanks to sales up 19% to 3.679 and 12.4% share. The French-Romanian manufacturer is followed this month by its parent brand Renault, up a spectacular 55% to 3.164 units and 10.7% share, overtaking Skoda (+28%), Volkswagen (+8%) and Toyota (+5%). Notice also Opel up 30%, Fiat up 24%, Suzuki up 114% and Lada up 257%. ‘Local’ manufacturer Great Wall is up 4% but down to #16 with 2% market share.
The Dacia Dokker is the best-selling nameplate in Bulgaria for the third consecutive year, even outpacing the market with volumes up 30% to 1.586. It distances the Nissan Qashqai (+21%) and the Renault Captur up 70% to rank higher in Bulgaria (#3) than at home in France (#4). The Skoda Octavia (+11%) drops two spots to #2 while the Renault Clio IV (+53%) is up one to #5. The Skoda Fabia (+133%), VW Passat (+52%), Renault Master (+98%), Opel Corsa (+69%) and Nissan X-Trail (+245%) also impress. Assembled locally, the Great Wall Steed 5 is up 50% to break into the Top 20.
The locally-assembled Great Wall Steed 5 ranks #20 in Bulgaria this year.
A caveat to these results is the fact that Bulgaria sales figures are skewed by re-exports to other European Union countries, with a large portion of new car sales in the country never making it to local roads – as much as 30% – thanks to Bulgaria displaying some of the lowest car prices in the EU. See here for more on this phenomenon.
