Europe May 2015: VW Passat confirms Top 10 spot

Still no ‘teaser’ Top 10 from JATO Dynamics so it’s straight to the complete European rankings once again with the traditional one month delay. Still in positive, Europe new car sales are up a shy 1% in May due to less selling days at 1.142.910 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 5.974.883 units, up 7% on 2014. This is the 21st consecutive month of year-on-year increase in Europe. Volkswagen remains sovereign in the brands ranking despite sales down 1% to 142.616, ahead of Ford (-1%) while Opel (-3%) overtakes Renault (+6%) for the last spot on the podium.

Audi is the best-selling luxury brand but with sales down 6% year-on-year, it is under intense threat this month from Mercedes (+6%) at 62.449 deliveries vs. 61.213 while BMW (+3%) is distanced at 56.977. Fiat (+6%), Nissan (+15%), Hyundai (+4%), Kia (+5%) and Mini (+37%) also outpace the market inside the Top 20. Further down, the Macan pushes Porsche up 13%, the all-new Vitara lifts Suzuki up 14%, the Discovery Sport boosts Land Rover up 18%, the Space Star kicks Mitsubishi up 31%, the return of the Forfour speeds up Smart 82% and the Renegade fuels Jeep sals up 140%.

Over in the models ranking, the Top 6 best-sellers return to their YTD 2015 and FY 2014 order albeit with all nameplates on the podium losing ground year-on-year: the VW Golf is #1 (-5%) followed by the Ford Fiesta (-2%) and Renault Clio (-9%), while the VW Polo (+14%) and Ford Focus (+11%) shine. The Nissan Qashqai and Skoda Octavia both jump back up 3 spots to #7 and #8 respectively, the VW Passat is up 21% on June 2014 to remain inside the Top 10 for the 2nd month running at #9 and the Opel Astra makes its return among Europe’s 10 favourite nameplates thanks to sales down just 1% to 17.220.

Below, the Peugeot 308 is up 13% to finish the month only 149 sales below its lil sis the 208, the Renault Captur tirelessly improves by 30% at #14, the Peugeot 2008 is up 10% to #17, the Mercedes C-Class up 47% to #18, the Skoda Fabia up 35% to #19, the Opel Mokka up 17% to #21 and the Mini more than doubles its sales to #24. Notice also the Nissan Juke up 33%, the Ford Mondeo up 75%, Toyota Aygo up 52%, BMW 4 Series up 49%, Mercedes GLA up 22% and the Mercedes CLA up 58%.

Among recent launches, the Citroen C4 Cactus is down one spot on April to #65, the Fiat 500X down 9 to #69, the Jeep Renegade up 7 to #78, the Suzuki Vitara is up 17 to break into the Top 100 at #87 and the Nissan Pulsar is up 22 to #96. We welcome no less than five all-new nameplates inside the European ranking this month, led by the Renault Kadjar landing directly inside the Top 150 at #149 with 1.768 sales, above the Mazda CX-3 at #196 (729 units), Jaguar XE at #202 (641 deliveries), Ssangyong Tivoli at #239 (261 sales) and the Opel Karl/Vauxhall Viva at #240 (255 units).
