Among the 95 all-new nameplates making their appearance in the worldwide sales charts in 2014, the most successful comes from China where it became the most successful launch in the history of automobile there, full stop. The Baojun 730 lands directly at #204 worldwide with 120.089 deliveries solely in China. A symbol and one of the reason behind the exponential growth of the MPV market in China in 2014, the Baojun 730 hit 12,006 sales in its first month, 21,016 sales for its 2nd month and 30,089 for its 4th month, making it the fastest-ever nameplate to reach both the 20,000 and 30,000 monthly sales mark in China. It currently ranks #4 overall there so far in 2015 and could pretend at a podium ranking by the time the year comes to an end.

Only two additional newcomers break the 100.000 worldwide sales milestone in 2014. The first one is the Honda Mobilio wit 105.591 units sold in 2014. Its first market was Indonesia where it teased the perennial leader there, the Toyota Avanza, in early 2014 before finishing the year at a stunning 2nd place overall with 79.288 units. It also launched in India notably and is currently spreading all across South-East Asia.

The cute-as-a-button Suzuki Hustler is the third all-new nameplate to manage over 100.000 deliveries in 2014 (104.233), and this is all the more remarkable that it operates in the kei car segment that is restricted to its home country, Japan. The Hustler’s success last year participated in accelerating the SUVsation of the Japanese kei car market, with most manufacturer rushing to launch ‘cross’ variants of their range as fast as possible to reap the benefits of this new trend.

Porsche Macan World 2014. Picture courtesy of largus.frThe Porsche Macan splendidly finds a spot among the 10 most successful new launches of 2014.

Far below, we have the VW Golf Sportsvan at #344 with 61.850 units which is in fact catching up where the Golf Plus left it, above the ChangAn CS75 (52.991), JAC Refine S3 (50.140), Haval H2 (49.351), BAIC Huansu S3 (48.506), Porsche Macan (44.636) and Peugeot 108 (44.131). That’s five Chinese nameplates among the 10 most successful worldwide launches of 2014 – perfectly in line with the Chinese market’s size and bustling dynamism despite a cooling down of its growth.

Lexus NX 2014. Picture courtesy of motortrend.comVery promising worldwide start for the Lexus NX.

The Datsun GO is a disappointment at 35.421 units spread across two body styles (hatchback and MPV) and three markets (India, Indonesia and South Africa), while the Citroen C4 Cactus, Subaru Levorg, Perodua Axia and Lexus NX all hit the mark.
