Not only is the Argentinean new car market struggling overall in the wake of import tax increases and galloping inflation (-30% in July to 61,213 registrations and -24% year-to-date at 442,091), its smaller size also means it is struggling to find itself a clear leader in the models sales charts. After 4 consecutive years of undisputed domination up to 2013, the Chevrolet Classic has sunk to a paltry 6th position so far in 2014, leaving an open field for new pretenders to the title of most popular model in Argentina. The VW Gol Trend leads the way for now at 17,448 sales and 3.9% but is down to #7 in July. The Toyota Hilux ranks 2nd in 2014 but only 5th this month, while the Ford Ecosport is third both year-to-date (3.6%) and in July but seems to be struggling to get to the next level. And this month two additional models top the ranking: the Renault Clio Mio delivers its best-ever market share in the country at 6.1% thanks to 3,704 sales, in pole position for the 2nd time ever after after November 2013 and knocking down the Fiat Palio (#1 in May and June) to 2nd place at 3,332 units and 5.4%. These scores enable each model to advance to #4 and #5 year-to-date respectively.

Ford Ecosport Argentina July 2014Can the Ford Ecosport finish 2014 in pole position in Argentina? Not likely.

Further down, let’s salute the good performances of the Ford Focus at #6, Toyota Etios at #8 and Chevrolet Celta at #18 while a few new models make themselves noticed: the Chevrolet Tracker is up 16 spots on June to #39, the Fiat Nuevo Fiorino up 21 to #30, the VW Up is up 72 ranks to #36 and 502 sales for its first full month in the country, the Honda City is up a further 6 ranks to #44 vs. #62 year-to-date and the Fiat 500L is up 50 to #143 for its 2nd appearance in the Argentinean ranking. Brand-wise, Fiat enjoys its 2nd month in a row in first place thanks to sales up 1% to 15.4% share and is now #2 year-to-date below Volkswagen, down a harsh 39% to #3 this month. Chevrolet is #2 but #5 year-to-date while Ford (-17%) and Renault (-48%) round up the Top 5. Notice also Toyota up a huge 35%, Honda up 8% and Nissan up 19%.
