The Swiss new car market clearly hasn’t caught up with the rest of Europe: it is still down a worrying 8% year-on-year in March to 26,250 registrations, bringing the First Quarter result to 68,395 units, down 5% on 2013. Switzerland confirms in this start of 2014 that it is in fact a ‘two-model market’, with the VW Golf and Skoda Octavia each selling much more than double any other vehicle in the country. This month the Golf is at 4.3% share and the Octavia at 3.6% while the third best-seller (the VW Tiguan) only grabs 1.6%. Switzerland is also a VAG market but that’s not new: 5 of the 6 best-sellers are VAG models (add the VW Polo at #4 and the Audi A3 at #6).
The Mercedes GLA is already at Peugeot 2008/Renault Captur level in Switzerland.
The Nissan Qashqai confirms the new generation could earn it a Top 5 annual spot in 2014, ranking 5th in March with 1.5% share, the Seat Leon remains in the Top 10 at an impressive 9th place, the Mercedes C-Class jumps up 24 spots on last month to crack the Top 10 at #10, the A Class also shines at #11, while the Mazda3 reaches this generation’s best ranking so far at #15. But the surprise of the month is the Mercedes GLA, landing directly at a world-best 58th position thanks to 170 sales! That’s just one less than the Peugeot 2008 (#57) and 29 more than the Renault Captur (#69). Notice also the Range Rover Evoque up to #37, Skoda Rapid up to #42, BMW 4 Series up to #63 and the Tesla Model S breaking into the Swiss Top 100 at #89.
