For the first time on BSCB I can share with you official sales data for Uganda. 2,465 new vehicles were registered in the country in 2013, up 20% on 2012 and including 1,837 passenger cars and light/medium commercial vehicles, for which we now have access to detailed brand data. Japanese manufacturers are ultra dominant in Uganda, securing over 80% of the new light vehicle market. Toyota reigns supreme with 831 sales and 45.2% share and should still be in a position to place the Corolla and Hilux at #1 and #2 in the country. Nissan follows with 21.1% share ahead of Mitsubishi, Ford and a surprise 5th: Indian manufacturer Tata with 4.5% of the Ugandan market. Note a total of 50,659 vehicles were ‘first registered’ in 2013, that includes used cars imported into the country, to be compared with 39,147 in 2012, 35,529 in 2010 and 28,026 in 2007.
