The Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association communicates each month the sales of locally produced models, which is a pretty accurate representation of the most popular new cars in the country as imports are still relatively limited. After a sad 12 consecutive months of harsh decline, the Pakistani new car market looks like it is finally on the mend, up 1% year-on-year in July to 10,579 registrations, which brings the year-to-date total to 88,349 units, still down 18% on 2012 however.

If the Toyota Corolla remains the most popular model in the country, this month it is threatened by the Suzuki Mehran, a 1986 Maruti 800, with 2,368 sales and 22.4% share vs. 2,299 and 21.7% for the Suzuki. Year-to-date, the Corolla keeps a comfortable lead at 22,547 units and 25.5% vs. 19.903 and 22.5%. The two stars of the month are the Suzuki Cultus, a 2nd generation 1989 Swift, up 4 spots on June to #3 with 1,225 sales and 11.6% and the Honda City up 2 to #4 at 1,162 units and 11%. Finally, notice the Toyota Hilux up one spot to #8 and 4.5% share vs. 2.9% year-to-date.
