After passing the million-unit annual sales mark for the first time last year, the Indonesian new car market continues all guns blazing in 2013: up 12% year-on-year after 6 months to 601,952 registrations and well on track for another record year. If the most popular vehicle has no worries to have, there is a little change below and more may be to come in the 2nd half… The Toyota Avanza is still by far Indonesia’s best-seller even though it gains less ground than the market at +7% to a record 103,489 units, resulting in a market share going from 18.5% to a still extremely enviable 17.2%. The Avanza becomes in the process the first ever vehicle to sell over 100,000 units in 6 months in the country.

Compared to this time last year, the Avanza’s twin the Daihatsu Xenia and the Toyota Innova exchange positions to become #2 (+3%) and #3 (-11%) respectively but both lose share to 6.2% and 5.7%. But the big change comes in 4th place: launched last year to replace the APV and potentially get higher, the Suzuki Ertiga has done just that: it is up 279% to #4 with 32,447 sales and 5.4% but has ranked #2 three times in the last 5 months, which indicates the 2nd half will be a very interesting period to follow. The Ertiga could well shake things a little and jump on the year-end podium.

The following 4 models are relatively stable in the scheme of things: the Daihatsu Gran Max Pick-up remains #5, the Suzuki Carry Pick-up is down 2 spots to #6, the Nissan Grand Livina stays #7 and the Toyota Rush is down 2 to #8. Not handicapped by flooded Thai factories anymore, the Honda Jazz is up a brilliant 60% year-on-year and 4 ranks to #9 at 16,056 units. Other great performers include the Honda CR-V up to #12, Toyota Dyna up to #15 and the Toyota Etios best-selling all-new model at #19 with 7,698 sales. Finally, notice the Chevrolet Spin at 2,847 units, it should break into the Top 20 by year-end and that would be a first for Chevrolet in Indonesia.
