While the mainland USA market is on fire in May (+8%), new car sales in Puerto Rico are disappointingly down 5% to 7,865 registrations which brings the year-to-date total to 40,152 units, up just 3% on 2012. Toyota renews its exceptional performance from last month and places once again 3 models on the podium: the Corolla leads the way with 542 sales and 6.9% and reinforces its 2013 YTD leadership at 2,878 units and 7.2%. The Yaris ranks 2nd both in May with 379 sales and 4.8% and year-to-date at 2,369 units and 5.9% while the RAV4, boosted by the new generation, rounds up the podium like in April thanks to 341 sales and 4.3%. It is now #5 so far in 2013.
But the performance of the month goes to the Nissan Versa, up 7 spots on April to #4 with 303 units and 3.9%, way above its YTD level of 2.7% and now #6 in 2013. Normally extremely (and surprisingly) weak in Puerto Rico, American models fare ok this month: the Jeep Grand Cherokee is up a whopping 34 ranks to #11, the Jeep Patriot is up 6 to #16 vs. #34 YTD, the Ford Explorer up 5 to #21 vs. #31, Dodge Ram up 9 to #27 vs. #42, Ford Focus up 26 to #30 and the Jeep Compass is up 12 ranks to #34…
