As it has now been the tradition for nearly one year, after exploring the Top 258 models in the US in May we have a closer look at the year-to-date ranking to extract longer-term trends. Overall the US market is up 7% to 6,424,707 registrations. Extremely strong May sales push the Ford F-Series and Chevrolet Silverado further away from the rest of the pack, up 22% to just under 300,000 sales for the former and up 24% to just under 200,000 units for the latter. The Toyota Camry is still in difficulty at -5% in third place and one of only two models to lose ground year-on-year in the Top 10 with the Honda Civic.
Toyota Tundra sales are 15% above one year ago in 2013.
The Honda Accord at #4 (+23%), Dodge Ram at #6 (+23%), Ford Fusion at #7 (+22%) and Ford Escape at #10 (+30%) are all the Top 10 models that improve much faster than the market. The Subaru Forester at #50 and +36% dethrones the Ford Explorer (#19, +34%) as the biggest improver inside the Top 50, while the Hyundai Elantra (+30%), Dodge Avenger (+22%) and Toyota Tacoma (+21%) all perform very solidly.
US sales Nissan Leaf have almost tripled compared to 2012.
The Dodge Dart is knocked out of the Top 50 by the Subaru Forester and lands at #51 with 38,512 sales, still the best-performing all-new model in the ranking but still not living to Fiat-Chrysler’s expectations… Way below but gaining 4 spots compared to last month at #85 we find the Subaru XV Crosstrek with 20,438 units, then the Ford C-Max at #102 (-1), Cadillac ATS at #106 (stable), Chevrolet Spark at #111 (-3), Cadillac XTS at #123 (-1) and Buick Encore at #135 (-5 even though the model was just launched).
Mercedes SL-Class sales are up 158% so far in the US.
Notice also the Nissan Pathfinder up 202% to #54 thanks to the new model (the biggest progression in the Top 100), the Mazda CX-5 up 172% to #66, Toyota Avalon up 108% to #67, Acura RDX up 122% to #93, Infiniti JX35 up 135% to #124, Nissan Leaf up 191% to #152 and the Mercedes SL Class up 158% to #195.
