As predicted last week, the US new car market has rebounded in May to a seasonally adjusted annual selling rate (SAAR) of 15.2 million units. Monthly registrations are up a very dynamic 8% year-on-year to 1,444,626 which brings the year-to-date total to 6,424,707 units, up 7% on 2012. WardsAuto says this is the 24th consecutive month Light Vehicle sales volumes outpace same-month prior-year results, and the 32nd consecutive month the monthly daily sales rate grew compared to year-ago. At 207,952 units, Toyota has its best month since August 2009 which was the peak of the cash for clunkers scrappage program while Subaru simply had its best month ever at 39,892 deliveries, up 32% year-on-year.

Again as predicted last week, extremely strong pick-up sales are pushing the US market up. The best illustration of this trend is the exceptional performance of the Ford F-Series returning to pre-financial crisis levels. At 71,604 sales, it is up a mammoth 31% on May 2012 and crosses the 70,000 monthly units milestone for the first time since March 2007. Even more impressive, this is the F-Series’ best May figure since 2005 and its best month overall in almost 7 years, since August 2006 when it sold 76,804 units. Year-to-date, Ford’s best-selling pick-up is now up 22% to 299,477 sales which is 100,000 more than any other vehicle on the market. Notice also the Chevrolet Silverado up 25% to 43,283 units at #2 and the Dodge Ram up 22% to 31,672 at #6.
