Sales of Tesla Model S cars in the US (and worldwide for that matter) have been very hard to find as Tesla generally doesn’t report them. Except yesterday when the car company announced the first profits of its history over Q1 2013: US$15 million out of a US$563 million revenue. Tesla also announced they sold 4,900 Model S in the USA alone over the first Quarter of 2013, which simply positions it as the best-selling plug-in vehicle in the US!

The Tesla Model S distances no less the Chevrolet Volt (4,421), Nissan Leaf, Toyota Prius PHEV and Ford C-Max Energi … Plus, specialised website insideevs.com estimates that the Model S has kept its crown through April, adding up to between 6,600 and 7,200 sales over 4 months while the Volt is at 5,791. However it is anticipated that the Model S will not retain the plug-in pole position all the way to the end of 2013, as the US backlogged demand will be fullfilled sometime during Q3 2013, totalling around 10,000 US Model S. The rest, about 6,000 units, will be shipped to Europe.
