March and September are traditionally the strongest months of the year in the UK as they coincide with the launch of new licence plates that act like a new model year. While this year March was at -8%, September is at just -0.8% with 332,476 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 1,553,094 units, down 5%.
The Ford Fiesta is the best-selling car in the country for the 7th month in a row with 15,647 sales and 4.7%, reinforcing its 2011 pole position at 77,198 units and 5%. The Ford Focus hasn’t managed to topple its little sister from the #1 spot in spite of the new generation, #2 this month and year-to-date at 4.4%, ahead of the Vauxhall Corsa. In fact the September Top 5 is identical to the year-to-date one with the VW Golf and Vauxhall Astra following. The Vauxhall Insignia (#7 at 2.2%) and Mini (#8 at 2.1%) are back in the Top 10.
