South Korea May 2011: Hyundai Grandeur keeps the lead

The Hyundai Grandeur confirms its recently acquired domination of the South Korean car market and ranks #1 in May with 10,526 sales and 8.8% share. The Hyundai Avante is not far though at #2 with 10,402 units and 8.7%, up from 8.1% in April.

The new Kia Morning stays 3rd at 7.9% share, up from 7.4% last month, and is followed by the Hyundai Porter, up one spot at 6.7%. The Hyundai Sonata (#5) and Kia K5 (#6) see their market share go down to 6.2% and 5.1% respectively.

Kia Carnival R

The Kia Carnival R is back where it belongs, in the Top 20 at #19 with 2,157 sales and the Hyundai Veloster is up to #22 for its second month of sales with 1,882 units and 1.6% up from 1% in April.

    Wow, the Koreans sure do love their big cars. How much is petrol over there? I can’t figure out how Japan is so different – they’re both 1st world highly urbanized Asian countries, yet in Japan big cars don’t sell – it’s all those little Kei and micro cars and tall wagon looking things, whereas Korea seem to prefer the more western large sedans? Shrugs.
