Malaysia Full Year 2010: Perodua Myvi #1 for 5th year in a row

The Perodua Myvi finishes the year on a high at 8,289 sales and 15.6% share in December, bringing its 2010 total to 77,657 sales and 13.3% of the Malaysian market and making it the best-selling car in Malaysia for the 5th consecutive year in spite of a 14% drop over 2009 in a total market up 13% at 582,714 registrations.
The Proton Saga takes the 2nd spot like in 2009 with 72,303 sales (12.4%), ahead of the Perodua Viva at 69,048 sales (11.8%) and the Proton Persona at 44,391 sales (7.6%). The Perodua Alza is the only new entrant in the yearly Top 10 in 5th with 41,933 sales (7.2%). The Toyota Vios is still the best-selling non national model at #6 with 33,674 sales.

For the very first time, Motor Trader has made available the sales ranking for Eastern Malaysia. The states of Sabah and Sarawak are completely separated from mainland Malaysia by the South China sea, and the best-selling models are radically different, with a distinct focus on pick-ups.
The Perodua Viva is the best-selling car in Eastern Malaysia in 2010.
Third in the nation-wide ranking, the Perodua Viva is the best-seller in both Sabah and Sarawak with a total of 12,670 sales and an amazing 17.6% market share. The Proton Saga is #2 with 9,059 sales (12.6%) and the Perodua Myvi is 3rd with 8,393 sales (11.6%). Toyota is the #2 brand behind Perodua in the region and it places the Toyota Hilux in 4th in both states with a total of 7,643 sales and 10.6% share.
Other Sabah/Sarawak curiosities include the 5th place of the Isuzu D-Max in Sabah (2,336 sales, 6.9%), the 10th spot of the Mitsubishi Triton in the general ranking (1,504 sales, 2.1%) and the 16th place of the Ford Ranger (796 sales) as well as the 13th position of the Toyota Rush in Sabah with 455 units sold.

Hi Matt, I tried to access the website you recommended but to no avail, btw, is there a hard copy of this data and past records on sale anywhere in Malaysia, I woud like to have the brandwise/modelwise sales from 2008 onwards. I dont mind buying, do you know where it could be available.

I was trying to compile date from what has been given on the blog, as far as the sales of top 10 selling cars in 2010, i notice the data is only upto rank 6 what about the remianing 4 spots, can you give the details similar to what has been given for the top 6. Likewise do you have the figures for Eastern Malaysia, with pick ups & 4 W/D’s seperately. I tried to access the site mentioned by you for Sabah/Sarawak sales, but it did not open. Do you have th figurs for this area. It would be a big help. John Alexander

Sorry I dont know how to address you, my name is John Alexander and I am working for a tyre company in Singapore. We have recently launched our brand of tyres in Malaysia, currently I am working out the sizewise potentails in Malaysia and in that context was working on the car potentials, brandwise/modelwise. This site was extremely helpful, infact, I would be extremely gratefull if I could have the passenger car/suv/mpv/pickup/light commecial & heavy commercial vehicle sales brandwise & if possible modelwise for the years starting 2007 till date. From that I will be able to work out the approx sizewise tyre requirement, this info will be invaluable to me. These figures if given seperately for Eastern malaysia will be a huge help. Your effort to compile all this data is very impressive indeed and I commend you. I’ve been compiling auto statistics for Malaysia since 1980 (before we had Excel and PCs) and I can appreciate the amount of work that goes into it.
I’ll be happy to contribute our Malaysian data to make your site the most comprehensive in the world. If I can find the time, I’ll work on providing historical data as well.

I’m sure you would have noticed that I am starting to add historical data for as many countries as possible but this takes a lot of time on top of the regular monthly updates, so if you have Malaysian data up to 1980, I’d be very interested in receiving it, in whatever format you have, no need to work on it to make it better: I can dive into the data and do this from here! Let me know what works best for you.
