1994 was a great year for Spanish new car sales, up a massive 21% year-on-year to 860,000 registrations. The models pole position changes hands for the third consecutive year: after the Renault 19 in 1991, the Renault Clio in 1992 and the Opel Astra in 1993, the Ford Escort takes the lead in Spain this year with sales up 28% to 52,631 and 6.1% market share. The Opel Astra is down to #2 at 46,683 units and 5.4%, followed by the Opel Corsa up 5 spots and 38% to 45,120 sales and 5.3%.

Seat Cordoba

The Ford Fiesta is also up sharply at +30% to #5, while the Peugeot 306 breaks into the year-end Spanish Top 10 for the first time, up 165% and 10 spots to #8 and 38,787 units. The best performing newcomer in the Top 50 is the the sedan version of the Seat Ibiza, the Seat Cordoba, landing directly at a fantastic 12th position with 22,282 sales and 2.6%. Add these to the 41,942 Seat Ibiza sold this year and with 64,224 units the Ibiza/Cordoba family would be by far #1.

Renault Laguna

Another all-new model that gets noticed in Spain this year is the Renault Laguna, directly at #13 with 22,135 units and 2.6%. Notice also the Fiat Punto landing at #15, the Renault Twingo up 142% to #18, the Nissan Micra up 70% to #24 and #1 Japanese, the Fiat Cinquecento up 204% to #28 and the Rover 600 landing at #39.

Toyota Corolla

I could not access any sales data for the period, but one thing is certain: the Toyota Corolla continues to dominate and is the best seller in Japan for the 25th and 26th consecutive years in 1993 and 1994…

If you have any info about car sales in Japan between for these two years please be sure to get in touch!

Austria 1993-1994: VW Golf above 10% share, Mazda 323 #5

VW Golf

* See the Top 50 best-selling models by clicking on the title! Many thanks to STAC *

The Top 3 best-selling models in Austria are unchanged over the period: the VW Golf leads the way by far and manages to stay on or above 10% market share both years at 28,451 sales and 10% in 1993 and 29,894 and 10.9% in 1994. The Opel Astra ranks #2 with 7% share then 6.2% and the Ford Escort rounds up the podium at 4.3% then 3.8%. The Opel Vectra and Corsa exchange positions going from #4 to #9 and vice versa.

Mazda 323

The most striking performance in Switzerland could well be found in 5th place: the Mazda 323 reaches that position in 1994, up one spot on the previous year to 8,302 sales and 3%. If in 1993 there were 3 Japanese models in the Swiss Top 10 with the Toyota Corolla at #8 and the Mazda 626 at #10, the 323 is alone in 1994. Notice also the VW Vento at #7 in ’93, and in ’94 the Ford Mondeo up 8 spots to #6, the VW Passat up to #7 and the BMW 3 Series up 4 to #8, the Mercedes C-Class up 33 to #11, the Peugeot 306 up 14 to #14 and the Fiat Punto landing directly at #20.

Brazil 1994: Fiat Uno edges out VW Gol!

January 17th, 1995 No comments

Big surprise this year: the VW Gol is no longer the best-selling car in Brazil and is replaced on top by the Fiat Uno. The fight was extremely tight and the Uno finishes the year only 486 sales ahead with 221,627 units vs. 221,141 for the Gol…

This shift can be explained by two factors: Fiat launched the Turbo version of the Uno at the start of the year and this surely has given a bit of kick to the Uno’s sales figures, and the VW Gol 2nd generation was launched at the end of the year so buyers would have been waiting for the new model to arrive, weakening the Gol’s sales numbers.

The Gol is nevertheless leader 8 out of 12 months, with the Uno on top in March (21,442 sales), May (20,067), August (20,405) and September (20,642). The Ford Escort takes the 3rd place with 88,476 sales (-1%) followed by the Fiat Tipo at 71,148 units, thanks to two appearances on the podium in November (13,523 sales) and December (15,135).

Chevrolet Corsa

The all-new Chevrolet Corsa launches in March and grabs a spot on the podium for the first time in August. The Chevrolet Monza (-6%) and Kadett (-26%) slow down whereas the Fiat Tempra has its best year in Brazil with 42,423 units changing hands (+27%).
