Austria January 2023: Seat Ateca signs first ever win in market up 20.7%

The Seat Ateca is the most popular vehicle in Austria for the first time.

18,850 new cars hit Austrian roads in January, a very solid 20.7% year-on-year improvement. Volkswagen (+16.1%) easily retains the lead of the brands ranking with 16.7% share vs. 14.9% over the Full Year 2022, and is followed by Skoda (+25%) like in the FY2022 rankings. Seat (+208.9%) surges 10 spots on December to #3 with 9.2% share, almost doubles that of FY2022 (4.8%). BMW (+27.3%), Toyota (+24.6%) and Mercedes (+23.4%) also beat the market in the remainder of the Top 10 but Ford (-7.7%), Dacia (-3.3%) and Audi (-0.2%) struggle. Below, Cupra (+41.2%), Tesla (+1232.1%) and Citroen (+42.3%) all impress.

Model-wise, the Seat Ateca (+247.1%) unexpectedly surges from outside the December and Full Year 2022 Top 20 to land directly in pole position with 3.1% share. This is the first time the Ateca tops the Austrian charts, its previous best being #3 in July 2020. Only two sales below is the VW Polo (+27.8%) followed by the Seat Arona (+388.4%) also breaking its ranking record at #3 vs. a previous best of #5 in February 2021. The Skoda Octavia (+19.8%) and VW Golf (+67.4%) round out the Top 5 above the Seat Ibiza (+114.8%) and VW Taigo (+32.5%). The Top 9 models are all from the VW Group. Other great performers include the Tesla Model Y (+2191.7%), Skoda Karoq (+121.8%) and Dacia Duster (+86.8%).
