The Spanish new car market drops -5.4% year-on-year in 2022 to 813,396 registrations which is the lowest annual volume since 2013 (723.936). December sales are down -14.1% to 73.927 units as the market was handicapped by difficulties in transporting vehicles to dealerships. Over the Full Year, private sales resist a little better than the market at -1.7% to 366,364 units while company sales gain 4.1% to 348,144. Sales to rental companies tumble down -35.1% to just 98,888. Looking at regions, Madrid (-6%) follows the market and holds a mammoth 42.1% share of the total volume at 342,413 units, while Cataluña (-8.1%) is down to 101,724 sales, Andalucia (-5.1%) registers 82,022 units and Comu. Valenciana (-4.2%) resists at 71,023. Regions posting a year-on-year improvement are Canarias (+22.5%), Baleares (+17.8%) and Ceuta y Melilla (+2.4%).

The brands ranking is completely reshuffled this year. Leader in 2021, homegrown Seat (-30.2%) loses over 20,000 sales and falls to 6th place overall while the #2 brand last year, Peugeot (-18.6%) is down to #5. In contrast, Toyota (+17.9%) climbs two spots to score its first ever annual win in Spain. In fact the podium is entirely composed of Asian brands for the first time in Spanish history. Kia (+10.7%) is up four ranks to #2 and Hyundai (+3.5%) up two to #3. Volkswagen (-4.6%) stays in 4th place overall. Mercedes (+8.3%), up two spots to #10, and Dacia (+2.5%) are the additional gainers in the Top 10. Renault (-12%) and Citroen (-8.3%) fall faster than the market but hold onto their 2021 ranking at #7 and #8 respectively. Below, notice MG (+825.1%) up to #23, Lynk & Co (+435.9%), Tesla (+43.3%), Alfa Romeo (+28.3%), Cupra (+21.5%) and Porsche (+14.8%) all up significantly.

Model-wise, the Hyundai Tucson (+3.4%) manages its first ever win and becomes the first Asian model to top the annual Spanish charts. The Dacia Sandero (+1.8%) is also up one spot on 2021 to #2, both models toppling last year’s leader the Seat Arona (-20.4%). The Toyota Corolla (+0.1%) advances one rank to #4 with the VW T-Roc (+3.8%) up three to #5. The Fiat 500 (+0.4%) is up four to #6, the Toyota C-HR (+6.5%) up five to #7 and the Kia Sportage (+49.1%) up 16 to crack the Top 10 at #9 thanks to a new generation. Reversely the Peugeot 2008 (-19.6%) and Citroen C3 (-11.5%) suffer. The Toyota Yaris (+23.2%) shines at #12 while the Toyota Yaris Cross (+352.1%) spends its first full year in market at #16. The Seat Leon, best-seller in 2019, is down -50.3% and 27 spots to #34…
