France November 2022: Tesla (+168.6%), MG (+298.6%) break records, market up 9.8%

The new MG 4 helps the brand to record heights in November.

New car sales in France progress +9.8% year-on-year in October to 133,961 units, the year’s largest uptick. The year-to-date tally remains frankly in negative however at -8.6% or 130,000 sales to 1,371,009. The market still evolves at historically low levels, being down -22.5% on pre-pandemic November 2019 and -31.6% on the first 11 months of 2019. Private sales almost match the market at +9.6% to generate a 44.5% market share, but is down -3.3% year-to-date to 45.3% of the market. Note short term rental sales surge +42.5% for the month to 7% market share.

Petrol sales gain 8.4% year-on-year to 48,500 and 36.2% share vs. 36.7% a year ago but are down -15.8% year-to-date to 513,075 and 37.4% share vs. 40.6% in 2021. Diesel implodes -18.7% to 18,437 and 13.8% share vs. 18.6% a year ago and sink -32.4% YTD to 217,594 and 15.8% share vs. 21.5% over the same period in 2021. HEV surge 34.6% to 29,501 units and 22% share vs. 18% in November 2021 and are up 13.6% YTD to 296,373 and 21.6% share vs. 17.4% over the first 11 months of 2021. PHEV sales edge up 1.5% to 12,342 and 9.2% share vs. 10% last year and are down -10.8% YTD to 112,004 and 8.2% share vs. 8.4% a year ago. EV sales gain 23.6% in October to 20,303 units and 15.2% share vs. 13.5% in November 2021, outselling diesel, and soar 28.2% YTD to 178,134 and 13% share vs. 9.3% in 2021.

In the brands ranking, Peugeot (+9.8%) exactly match the market to 16.1% share, whereas Renault (-0.8%) edges down and goes against the market with a poor 14% share. Note Peugeot’s sales to rental companies shoot up 67% year-on-year. Despite falling year-on-year, Dacia (-5.3%) is up two spots on October to land on a record third step of the podium for the third time ever after last May and June. Citroen’s result (-21.1%) is really concerning as the brand falls to 7.8% share, its lowest since last June (7.7%), despite sales to rental companies up 44.3%. It ends the month less than 100 sales below Dacia. Toyota (+42.1%) scores a fantastic gain in 5th place just 350 sales below Citroen. It widens its YTD advantage over Volkswagen (+47.6%) also up significantly this month. The biggest gainer in the Top 10 is Tesla (+168.6%), breaking its ranking, volume and share records whereas we are not even at the end of the quarter. Ford (+110.7%) also posts a surreal gain at #9. MG (+298.6%) breaks into the Top 20 for the first time at #17 and also smashes its volume and share records (2,308 and 1.7%), outselling such established brands as Opel, Nissan, Volvo, Seat and Suzuki.

Model-wise, the Peugeot 208 (+10.8%) comfortably retains the pole position while the Renault Clio (-14.4%) rallies back up three spots on last month to #2 but falls heavily year-on-year. The Clio reclaims the #2 YTD spot off the Dacia Sandero (+0.1%) down to #4 this month. The Citroen C3 (-6.9%) stays in third place while the Peugeot 2008 (-37.8%) freefalls at #5. The rest of the Top 10 vastly outpaces the market. The Peugeot 308 III is up +715.2% on a launch year-ago volume, the Tesla Model Y (+350.3%) is up 47 ranks on last month to crack the Top 10 for the first time at #10 (previous best #20), with the Toyota Yaris (+130%), Renault Captur (+64.2%) and Peugeot 3008 (+26.8%) also impressive. The Tesla Model 3 (+87.3%) misses the Top 10 for 82 sales at #11, while the Citroen C5 Aircross (+64.1%), Ford Puma (+286.7%) and Mini Hatch (+81%) soar. The Renault Megane E-Tech falls 8 spots on October to #21, the MG ZS is up 19 to a record #27 and the Renault Austral is up 56 to #34, the model’s first incursion in its home Top 50.
