Russia September 2022: Lada Granta up to 28.7% share, Haval and Jolion break share records, market off -59.6%

The Haval Jolion is up to a record 4th place in Russia in September.

New light vehicle sales in Russia confirm they have bottomed out in September at -59.6% year-on-year to 46,698 units compared to a worst of -83.5% last May. The year-to-date tally is now down -59.8% to 506,661 sales and, unlike September, the Q1-3 figure includes Chery, Cheryexeed, Mercedes and BMW brands who only report quarterly. Russian and Chinese brands continue to vastly outperform the market in September. Lada (+20.1%) manages a spectacular year-on-year gain to hit 44.2% share, a level unseen since 2005 when local brands held 62% share. GAZ (-26.6%) at #3 and UAZ (-24.8%) at #6 ensure a 57.8% share for Russian brands this month vs. just 21.5% in September 2021. For their part Chinese carmakers (-33.2%) hold 15.9% of the market vs. 9.3% in September 2021 when Chery and Cheryexeed was included. Haval (-2.4%) continues to perform beautifully and breaks its all-time share record at 7.3% in 4th place overall while Geely (-4.3%) stays in 7th place and Changan (+74.2%) breaks into the Top 10 at #9.

Model-wise, the Lada Granta (+245.4%) tightens further its suffocating grip, more than tripling its sales year-on-year to hit a new record 28.7% share. It appears all buyers in this segment have now replaced their previous choice with a Granta. Also outstanding is the Lada Niva (+124.8%) staying in 2nd place and #1 SUV in the country. The GAZ Gazelle (-25.4%) also stands its ground at #3 while the Haval Jolion (+234.7%) manages another surreal gain to advance to a record 4th place, the highest ranking ever held by a Chinese nameplate in Russia, also breaking its share record at 5%. However notice the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro, whose monthly sales are unavailable, almost at the Jolion level year-to-date, meaning there are probably two Chinese models in the Russian Top 5 this month. Below the Hyundai Tucson (-0.8%) up ten spots on August to #5, the Geely Coolray (+25.7%) breaks its ranking record at #6. It distances the antediluvian UAZ Classic Commercial aka Bukhanka (+10.2%) also very impressive. Unlike the Granta, the Lada Vesta (-85.6%) completely implodes at #9 but remains #2 year-to-date for now. The Lada Largus PC (-37.2%) and LCV (+585.7%) ensure there are 7 Russian models in the Top 10.
