In September, new vehicle sales in New Zealand backtrack -9.7% year-on-year to 14,879 units. This means the year-to-date volume tilts back into negative at -0.1% to 122,728 sales. Passenger cars freefall -42% to 2,026 and just 13.6% share vs. 21.2% a year ago, SUVs gain 2.7% to 8,554 and a mammoth 57.5% share vs. 50.5% in September 2021 and Light Commercials drop -12.6% to 3,547 and 23.8% share vs. 24.6% last year. Year-to-date, passenger cars beat the market at +2.2% to 21,145 and 17.2% share vs. 16.8% over the same period a year ago, SUVs are up 2.4% to 64,564 and 52.6% share vs. 51.3% in 2021 and Light Commercials fall -8.5% to 31,455 and 25.6% share vs. 28% last year.

In the brands ranking, Toyota (-9.1%) follows the market and remains in the pole position with 17.9% share, followed by Mitsubishi (-3.9%) at 14.1%. Tesla (+45.8%) enters the NZ podium for the first time ever and breaks its volume and share records for the second month in a row at 1,554 and 10.4%. Ford (-33.9%) can’t seem to benefit from the new Ranger effect and is hit hard this month. Kia (-2.7%) and Suzuki (+5.1%) both overperform and are followed by Hyundai (-18.3%) and Mazda (-39%) both sinking. Haval (-28.8%) is back up 10 spots on August to #11 but is battered year-on-year. Newcomer BYD is down 6 ranks on last month to #15.

Over in the models aisle, the Tesla Model Y stuns with its first ever pole position for only its 2nd month of sales. This is due to a big Tesla shipment at the end of the quarter like the brand is usually doing worldwide. The Model Y is up to a more reasonable #12 year-to-date. The Ford Ranger (-25.9%) is knocked down to 2nd place, outselling its archenemy the Toyota Hilux (+52.6%) but still way down year-to-date as the new generation is slowly getting to customers. The Mitsubishi Outlander (-10%) stays in 4th place, 35% of its September volume coming from rentals, it distances the Mitsubishi ASX (-13.1%) with 25% of its total being rental sales. The Toyota Yaris Cross advances 8 spots on last month to #8, its first time inside the NZ Top 10
