Europe July 2022: VW T-Roc #1 for the first time in market down -10.5%
The VW T-Roc is the best-selling vehicle in Europe for the first time.

New car sales in Europe 26 markets (UE+EFTA+UK) slow down their fall in July to -10.5%, the smallest drop since last February. The July volume stands at 866,038, down over 100,000 units on the same month last year and leading to a year-to-date tally of 6,463,694, off -12.4% over the same period a year ago. In the lead of the brands ranking, Volkswagen (-14.9%) falls faster than the market as it does year-to-date (-22.1%). Only two brands in the Top 20 are in positive. Toyota (-1.6%) resists very well in context to return to the 2nd place it also holds year-to-date. Mercedes (-5.3%) is up four spots on June to land on the third step of the podium with Peugeot (-10%) matching the market and Audi (-12%) failing to do so but up three ranks to #5. Hyundai (-7%) and Kia (-7.2%) also hold well and both rank inside the Top 10. The only gainer among the Top 10 brands is Dacia (+12.2%) continuing on its outstanding run at #9 vs. #12 YTD. Below, Seat (-46.8%) implodes and is only 4,000 sales above Cupra (+200.6%) tripling its sales year-on-year. MG (+100.6%), Alfa Romeo (+46.8%), Land Rover (+32.3%), DS (+16.7%) and Porsche (+15.6%) also shine.
We have a first in the models aisle: the VW T-Roc (+14.8%) is the best-selling vehicle on the continent for the first time, helped by strong performances in Germany (#2), Italy (#3) and the UK (#4). It is only the second time ever that an SUV leads the overall European charts after the Peugeot 2008 did so last October. The Dacia Sandero (-18.7%) stays at the 2nd place it also holds year-to-date but faces a harsh drop as it led the ranking a year ago. Still #1 year-to-date, the Peugeot 208 (+51.4%) falls to #3 this month despite a gigantic year-on-year gain, by far the largest in the Top 10. The Toyota Yaris (-20.9%) rallies back up six spots on June to #4 but freefalls year-on-year, while the Dacia Duster (+11.9%) manages a second month in a row inside the European Top 5 at #5. The Fiat 500 (+13.6%) posts another solid uptick, helped by its electric version accounting for 28% of its July volume. The Hyundai Tucson (-3.3%) edges down year-on-year but is up four ranks on last month to #7. It is followed by the VW Golf (-26%) which continues to struggle and endures the largest fall in the Top 10. Below a strong Opel Corsa (+12.4%), the Kia Sportage (+36.7%) scores a second ever Top 10 finish alongside last April.
