India July 2022: Market (+15.9%) at all-time high, Tata (+57.4%), Toyota (+50.3%) post volume records

The Tata Punch breaks its monthly volume record in July.

Showing an easing of the microchip crisis, new car wholesales in India shoot up 15.9% year-on-year in July to 341,112 units, establishing a new all-time monthly volume record. It eclipses the previous record of 333,660 set in October 2020. It is also the best July ever of course, beating the previous high of 296,346 set back in 2017, which was an all-time monthly volume record at the time. The year-to-date tally is now up 15.8% to 2,167,788, also a new record at this stage of the year, outpacing the 2,014,622 units reached over the first 7 months of 2018. This is only the 2nd time in Indian history that the 2 million wholesales milestone is reached after just 7 months and we are on the way to an all-time annual volume record for India.

Both Maruti Suzuki (+6.8%) and Hyundai (+5.1%) can’t follow the booming market but remain in the first two brands spot, holding almost exactly the same market shares as YTD. Tata (+57.4%) scores a third all-time volume record in a row at 47,506 units, ending the month only 3,000 units below Hyundai. It’s worth noting that the entire Top 14 brands ranking is unchanged on June. Mahindra (+34%) is up to its highest monthly volume in over a decade at #4 while Kia (+46.7%) also outraces the market in 5th place. Toyota (+50.3%) hits an all-time best volume at 19,693 units while Skoda (+44.4%) also outruns the market at #9. Honda (+12%) can’t quite match the hyped market growth whereas Renault (-27.2%) and MG (-5%) find themselves in precarious position. Volkswagen (+48.6%), Jeep (+26.5%) and Citroen (+1337.5%) thanks to the new India-specific C3, also impress further down.

Model-wise, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R (-1.1%) lodges a 5th consecutive month in the lead, cementing its YTD leadership to almost 28,000 sales above the Maruti Suzuki Swift (-4.9%) down to #3 this month. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno (+21.9%) advances one spot month-on-month to #2. Still at #4, the Tata Nexon (+38.2%) continues to evolve at near record heights and markedly below its year-ago levels. The Maruti Suzuki Dzire (+31.1%) and Eeco (+29.7%) also shine just below, as does the Hyundai Venue (+46.6%). The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso (+65.3%) and Tata Punch both score all-time record volumes to close out the Top 10. Below, the Mahindra XUV700 (#22) also breaks its volume record and the new Citroen C3 leaps up 15 spots on its inaugural month to #53.
