Germany July 2022: Market falls another -12.9%, Dacia, Porsche, Toyota and Kia among gainers

The Maserati Grecale has landed in the German sales charts.

The German new car market remains in frank recession in July with sales off another -12.9% year-on-year to just 205,911, keeping in mind July 2021 was already down -24.9% on the year prior. In fact sales are down -38.1% on pre-pandemic July 2019 (332,788). The year-to-date tally is now down -11.3% at 1,443,886 sales. Once again Volkswagen (-19.8%) falls faster than the market but at 19.4% share it performs better than its YTD level of 18.3%. The Top 4 brands are unchanged on last month, with BMW (-15.4%) at #2 followed by Mercedes (-23%) and Audi (-7.3%) resisting better. Skoda (+1.8%) lodges the only year-on-year uptick in the Top 8 and overtakes Opel (-12.1%) to hold the 5th place overall. Toyota (+3.9%) and Kia (+2.5%) also advance year-on-year, Hyundai (-6.7%) keeps its fall to the single digits and reaches its highest ranking since October 2021 at #7 but Ford (-29.5%) dives. Outside the Top 10, Dacia (+23.5%) climbs to #12 and 2.8% share, its best result since December 2019 (#10 and 2.9%). Cupra (+113.9%), Land Rover (+62.2%) and Tesla (+142.1%) stand out below just as newcomer Lynk & Co breaks into the Top 30 at #29.

Over in the models ranking, the VW Golf (-30.2%) falls hard but stays on top with a meagre 3.4% share. It distances the VW T-Roc (-4.2%) doing much better in 2nd place and the Opel Corsa (+22.9%) staying at #3 but displaying strong year-on-year growth. The VW Tiguan (-12.5%) ensures the Top 4 is unchanged on June, it is followed by the Skoda Octavia (+22.5%) rallying back up 26 ranks on last month to #5 vs. #16 year-to-date. The VW Passat (+0.3%) edges up to remain at #6 ahead of the Mini lineup (-19.5%) and BMW 3 Series (-27.8%) both in difficulty. The Fiat 500 lineup (+0.6%) and Audi Q3 (+17.2%) end the Top 10 on a positive note. Below, the Mercedes V-Class/EQV (+92.2%), Toyota Yaris/Cross (+54%), Cupra Formentor (+47.1%) and Kia Sportage (+108%) impress. The VW Taigo (#35), Dacia Jogger (#50), Tesla Model Y (#68) and Cupra Born (#70) are the best-selling recent launches.
