Preliminary data by ACEA has the European market (EU+EFTA+UK) down a damning -16.8% year-on-year to 1,066,137 units, this is worse than June 2020 that was impacted by the pandemic and the lowest June result since 1993. It also marks the fourth consecutive month of double-digit decline. The H1 2022 volume is down 13.7% or almost 900,000 sales to 5,597,656 units vs. 6,485,862 over the same period in 2021.Among the Big 5 markets, Spain (-7.8%), France (-14.2%) and Italy (-15%) fare better than the European average whereas Germany (-18.1%) and the UK (-24.3%) miss out. All-in-all, only two markets return positive results this month according to ACEA: Iceland (+35.7%) and Latvia (+6.2%) with Slovakia (-2.4%), Cyprus (-6.6%) and Romania (-6.6%) also resisting relatively well. At the other end of the scale, Sweden (-27.7%), Lithuania (-27.8%) and Croatia (-28.4%) freefall.

In the groups ranking, the Volkswagen Group (-24.4%) falls faster than the market and sees its advantage over #2 Stellantis (-16.5%) thaw to just above 40,000 units. Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi (-1.9%) and Hyundai-Kia (-3.9%) only dip down in a great month for both OEMs. Toyota Group (-14.3%) gains a little share whereas BMW Group (-18.1%) finds itself just above the European market decline. Daimler (-1.3%) scores the best hold in the Top 10, it distances Ford Motor (-22.6%), Tesla (-10.5%) and Geely/Volvo (-47.9%) imploding.

The Peugeot 208 remains the best-selling vehicle in Europe in June.

Brand-wise, Volkswagen (-28%) is in difficulty but easily wins the month. Peugeot (-5%) resists best in the Top 5 and climbs one spot on May to #2 overall, dislodging Toyota (-10.3%) after 6 straight months at #2. Renault (-16.8%) rallies back up four ranks on May to #4. BMW (-15.5%) is down one rank on last month to remain the most popular luxury brand at #5. The performance of the month goes to Dacia (+32.3%) up 8 spots on May to a record #6, smashing its previous best of #9 hit last December and posting the largest uptick in the Top 20. If you have followed the European countries June monthly updates until now this won’t come as a surprise as Dacia overperforms in most of the continent. Mercedes (+0.5%) is also up in the remainder of the Top 10 while below, Cupra (+77%) getting closer to Seat at #19 vs. #18, MG (+71.6%) and Porsche (+15.4%) sign rare gains.

Over in the models ranking, the Peugeot 208 (+37.9%) soars year-on-year to score a third consecutive monthly pole position, cementing its YTD leadership as the only nameplate to sell more than 100,000 units over H1 2022. The Dacia Sandero (+6.7%) also defies the negative market to rank #2 only 189 sales below the 208, its highest ranking since last January when it was the outright leader. The Sandero is also #2 year-to-date vs. #3 over the Full Year 2021. The Opel Corsa (-6.8%) drops one spot on May to #3 and the Duster (+26.9%) makes it two Dacias in the Top 4 for the 2nd time ever after last August. It is up 16 ranks on last month to #4, its best ranking, also since last August. The VW T-Roc (-13.4%), Fiat 500 (-5%) and VW Golf (-35.5%) follow, ahead of the Renault Captur (-13%), the brand’s best-seller for the month. The Tesla Model Y makes an end-of-quarter appearance inside the Top 10 at #9, far from the third place it managed last March.

In the BEV models ranking, below the Tesla Model Y the Fiat 500 (+43%) takes the 2nd place ahead of a  freefalling Tesla Model 3 (-76%). The Peugeot 208 (+43%) and Renault Twingo (+10%) are the only two additional gainers in the Top 10, whereas the Renault Zoe (-47%) and VW ID.3 (-47%) implode.
