Sweden June 2022: Kia (+10.8%) #1 brand for second time ever, market sinks -27.7%

The Sportage helps Kia to #1 brand in June.

New car sales in Sweden plunge -27.7% year-on-year in June to 26,088 units, leading to a year-to-date tally off -16.7% to 144,182. Rechargeable cars account for 55% of the June volume, up from 48.4% a year ago. They include 8,216 BEV (-5.4%) and 6,133 PHEV (-32.9%). Year-to-date, BEV sales surge 75.6% whereas PHEV registrations drop -24.6%. Kia (+10.8%) braves the negative environment to score its 2nd ever monthly win in Sweden after last September. The South Korean brand topples traditional local behemoth Volvo (-41.4%) in great difficulty this month with just 11.8% share. That’s only 126 above Volkswagen (-44.5%) also in trouble. Tesla (+36.8%) lodges its traditional end-of-quarter performance at #4, ahead of Toyota (-30%) falling faster than the market. Mercedes (+13%) and Ford (+10.6%) are the only additional gainers in the Top 10, whereas BMW (-14.3%) resists better than the market but Skoda (-36.4%) and Audi (-33.3%) can’t do the same. Further down, Citroen (+3.6%), Porsche (+61%), Cupra (+59.7%) – which outsells sister brand Seat (-76%) for the third straight month, Mitsubishi (+62.5%) and DS (+84%) are among the best performers.

Over in the models ranking, the Tesla Model Y takes the lead for the 2nd time ever after last December, distancing the Kia Ceed (+17.1%), Volvo XC60 (-18.1%) and Kia Niro (-17.9%). The VW ID.4 (-38.2%) is up two spots on May to #5 but struggles year-on-year. The Kia Sportage is up five ranks to #5 whereas the Volvo XC40 (-38%), still #1 year-to-date, is down to #7 for the month. The Ford Kuga (+21.5%) lodges the largest year-on-year gain in the Top 10 and ranks #8 with the Skoda Enyaq (-17.8%) and Volvo S/V60 (-72.4%) rounding out the Top 10. The Audi e-Tron (+197.7%) and MG HS (+1585%) are the best performers in the remainder of the Top 20. The Toyota Yaris Cross (#28) is the best-selling recent launch above the BMW i4 (#31), Kia EV6 (#34), Cupra Born (#42), Mercedes EQE (#44), VW Taigo (#45) and MG Marvel R (#47).
