Indonesia June 2022: Daihatsu Sigra scores 2nd ever win, retail sales up 27.1%

The Daihatsu Sigra is the best-selling vehicle in Indonesia in June.

New vehicle wholesales in Indonesia return in positive for the 5th time this year at +8.9% to 79,168 units, leading to a year-to-date volume up 20.8% to 475,321. Retail sales are even more dynamic at +27.1% to 83,573 and +20% year-to-date to 465,252.

Toyota (+17.3%) almost doubles the market growth rate to reach 34.5% share or more than 1 in 3 new vehicles sold this month in the country. Its year-to-date share now stands at 31.4%. In 2nd place, Daihatsu (+9.3%) matches the market growth and displaces Honda (+3.1%) down one spot on May to #3. Suzuki (-19.5%) and Mitsubishi (-30.5%) camp on their May positions but vastly underperform. Fuso (+114.5%), Hino (+90.8%), Isuzu (+41.3%) and most strikingly Hyundai (+520.3%) follow and all post fantastic gains. Wuling (-45.5%) closes the Top 10 in paltry fashion and also falls to #10 year-to-date.

In the retail charts, Toyota (+40.8%), Daihatsu (+36.3%) and Honda (+33.3%) form a podium entirely over performing while the Top 8 is unchanged on May. Hyundai (+506.9%), Hino (+66.6%), Isuzu (+50%) and Fuso (+40.1%) impress whereas Wuling (-8.9%) and Suzuki (-3.7%) fail to catch on the euphoric market. Below, Audi (+400%), Peugeot (+209.1%), Mercedes (+61.1%) and Mazda (+32.7%) also beat the market.

Looking at the models ranking, we have a surprise leader: the Daihatsu Sigra (+129.4%) takes full advantage of its facelift to access the pole position with 6.8% of the market. This is the Sigra’s second ever win in Indonesia after April 2020 which was disrupted by Covid lockdowns. The Toyota Rush (+24.1%) is up 10 spots on May to #2, its highest ranking since last November. The Honda Brio (-8.1%) is weak at #3 but remains #1 year-to-date above a disappointing Suzuki Carry Pikap (-20.9%). The Sigra’s twin, the Toyota Calya (+93.8%) is also in full flight year-on-year but is down two ranks on last month to #5. #1 over the Full Year 2021, the Toyota Avanza (-18.1%) struggles at #6 above the Toyota Kijang Innova (-16.2%) and Daihatsu Gran Max Pikap (-7.9%) also in bad shape. Below and in order of sales, the Daihatsu Ayla (+72.3%), Mitsubishi Xpander (+46.7%), Toyota Agya (+68.8%) and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport (+20.6%) all lodge stellar upticks.
