Portugal May 2022: Peugeot 208 now #1 YTD, 308 up to #4, registrations take a -23.5% dive

The Peugeot 308 is up 140.8% on the previous generation a year ago.

The Portuguese new car market slows down -23.5% year-on-year in May to 12,748 units, pulling the year-to-date volume into negative territory at -4.1% to 59,939. Brand-wise, Peugeot (-23.7%) matches the market but falls to 10.4% share vs. 11.7% so far this year. It is followed by Toyota (-13.4%) resisting best in the Top 5. Renault (-46.5%) is in total freefall while both Citroen (-30.7%) and Mercedes (-31%) both can’t keep up with the market. Below Seat (-7.8%) keeping its fall relatively contained, Kia (+40%) scores the only year-on-year lift in the Top 12, and a very impressive lift at that. Volkswagen (-19.7%), Hyundai (-29.5%) and BMW (-46.3%) in a very difficulty situation complete the Top 10. Below, notice Dacia (+8.7%), Mitsubishi (+4.4%), Cupra (+320.9%), Honda (+81.3%), Mazda (+25%) and Tesla (+2.9%) among the rare brands posting an uptick this month.

Looking at the models ranking, the Peugeot 208 (-30.6%) is up three spots on April to take the lead both of the May and year-to-date charts where it goes from #3 as of last month to #1 over the first 5 months of the year. The Toyota Yaris (-34.3%) remains at #2 and ranks #4 so far this year, with the Opel Corsa (+26.9%) up a whopping 24 spots on April to #3. The Peugeot 308 (+140.8%) is boosted up 10 ranks on last month to #4 now that the new generation is widely available. The Peugeot 2008 (-10.4%) rallies back 8 spots on April to #5 and now ranks #2 year-to-date, down from #1 last month. The Kia Stonic (+24.3%) is up 14 ranks to #6 whereas the leader of last month, the Citroen C3 (-46.3%) is down to #7 in May and #3 YTD. Below the Renault Captur (-57.4%) and Clio (-61.5%) diving down, the Hyundai Bayon is up 53 spots on April to break into the Top 10 for the first time in the nameplate’s career anywhere in the world.
