Italy May 2022: Toyota Aygo X in Top 20 in market down -15.1%

The Toyota Aygo X breaks into the Italian Top 20 in May.

The Italian new car market slows down its fall in May to -15.1% and 121,299 units, the smallest year-on-year decline of the year so far. The year-to-date tally is down down -24.3% or 178,000 sales below the same period last year at 556,974 vs. 735,420. After months of waiting, finally incentives were released for low emissions vehicles. On May 25, booking incentives was introduced and on the first day half of the €170 million for the 61-135 g / km of CO2 range was allocated, and after 6 days only €34 million remained. Out of the €209 million for the 0-20 g / km range, €19 million have been used and out of the €214 million for the 21-60 g /km, €10 million have been reserved.

Private sales drop -14.2% to 72,699 and 59.2% of the market for the month vs. 58.7% a year ago and are down -26.2% year-to-date to 341,619 and 60.5% vs. 62.4%. Self registrations implode -42.8% to 7,186 and 5.9% share vs. 8.7% and fall -31.8% year-to-date to 49,198 and 8.7% share vs 9.7%. Long term leases are the only segment up at +5.3% in May to 28,133 and 22.9% share vs. 18.5% in May 2021 and edge down -7.4% year-to-date to 116,945 and 20.7% share vs. 17% a year ago. Short-term rentals freefall -37.3% to 7,827 and 6.4% share vs. 8.6% and drop -45% year-to-date to 22,757 and 4% share vs. 5.6% over the same period in 2021. Company sales are down -12.7% to 6.917 for the month and -12.4% year-to-date to 34,603.

The 5.0 is the first DR model to appear inside the Italian Top 50.

With regards to fuel type, petrol is down -22% for the month to 34,893 and 28.4% share vs. 31% in May 2021, and off -35.9% year-to-date to 154,080 and 27.3% share vs. 32.4%. Diesel is off -29.5% in May to 23,911 and 19.5% share vs. 23.5% a year ago and -36.2% year-to-date to 116,488 and 20.6% vs. 24.6%. GPL is up 4.1% to 9,600 and 7.8% share vs. 6.4% and up 5.7% YTD to 47,417 and 8.4% share vs. 6%. HEV sales gain 1.8% to 41,127 and 33.5% share vs. 28% a year ago but are down -5.7% to 191,749 and 33.9% share vs. 27.4%. This includes 9,877 full hybrid in May (+16.9%) and 31,250 mild hybrid (-2.2%). Year-to-date full hybrids are up 13.3% to 50,584 and mild hybrid is down -11% to 141,165. PHEV drops -3.5% to 7,476 and 6.1% for the month vs. 5.4% in May 2021 and -2% year-to-date to 30,248 and 5.4% vs. 4.2%. Finally BEV surprise with a sluggish -13.2% to 4,489 and 3.7% vs. 3.6% and -19.1% YTD to 18.889 and 3.3% vs. 3.1%.

The Lancia Ypsilon ranks #2 in May and year-to-date.

In the brands ranking, Fiat (-17.9%) falls a little faster than the market but remains above its YTD level at 16.1% share vs. 14.9% so far this year. Volkswagen (-15.2%) matches the market this month to 9.2% share vs. 7.8% YTD. Toyota (-1.1%) resists very well to remain at #3, a ranking it now also holds year-to-date. Peugeot (-20.8%) is back up two spots on April to #4 but struggles year-on-year. It distances Ford (-21.5%), Jeep (-5.5%) in good shape, Citroen (-21.3%) and Opel (-14.4%). Dacia (+0.5%) is the only gainer in the Top 10 at #9, remaining above its sister brand Renault (-26% to #12) both for the month and year-to-date (#6 vs. #9). DR Motor (+163.5%) continues to surge at #19, with Nissan (+17.7%) and Hyundai (+0.1%) also up in the remainder of the Top 20 while Kia (-2.5%) and Lancia (-7.7%) hold very well. Cupra (+97.6%) almost doubles its volume year-on-year and advances to #21 brand just below Seat at #20. Honda (+36.7%), DS (+18.7%) and Alfa Romeo (+4.1%) also impress with upticks just as newcomer Lynk & Co is up one spot on last month to #32.

Model-wise, the Fiat Panda (+22.1%) stuns with a fantastic gain despite the fact the model has remained unchanged for over 10 years. The Lancia Ypsilon (-7.8%) is back up two spots on April to #2, a ranking it also holds year-to-date. Despite a scary year-on-year drop (-28%), the Fiat 500 climbs back up 5 ranks on last month to #3 and is now #7 YTD. The VW T-Roc (+1.5%) resists very well and edges down just one spot to #4 vs. #15 so far this year. Below, the Jeep Compass (-2%), Citroen C3 (-12.7%) and Jeep Renegade (-4.4%) also beat the market while the Renault Captur (+40.5%) delivers by far the best year-on-year improvement and slices its April ranking in two to #8. The Toyota Yaris Cross remains inside the Top 10 but is down four ranks on last month to #10. Excellent scores also by the Dacia Duster (+26.7%), Peugeot 208 (+15.9%) and Peugeot 3008 (+8.8%). For its second month in market, the Toyota Aygo X already breaks into the Top 20 at #18. Finally there is a DR model inside the Italian Top 50 for the very first time: the DR 5.0, a rebadged Chery Tiggo 5x, at #48.
