Indonesia May 2022: Honda (+39.1%), Suzuki (+12.8%) defy market off -9.8%

Honda BR-V sales are up 7-fold year-on-year thanks to the new model.

The Indonesian wholesales market drops -9.8% year-on-year on an already weak May 2021 to just 49,453 registrations, yet a strong start of the year means the year-to-date tally remains frankly up: at +23.5% to 396,153. The retail market dips a more contained -4.1% year-on-year to 61,558 units, leading to a year-to-date volume up 18.5% to 381,677. Toyota (-26.8%) freefall in the wholesales charts but easily retains the top spot at 26.9% share, whereas Honda (+39.1%) surges ahead and accelerates to #2 overall, passing Daihatsu (-16%). Suzuki (+12.8%) overtakes Mitsubishi (-35.8%) to #4. Hyundai (+714.9%) continues to spectacularly gear up just as Wuling (-67.6%) collapses. In the retail brands ranking, Toyota (-14.8%) posts a more measured decline, and is followed by Daihatsu (+5.9%). In fact the entire Top 7 is identical to April, with Honda (-9.1%), Mitsubishi (-10.8%), Suzuki (-4%), Fuso (+15.7%) and Isuzu (+29.4%) in tow.

Model-wise, the Honda Brio (+24.2%) returns to the top spot it holds year-to-date with a stunning 8.3% share. The Suzuki Carry Pikap (+14.2%) is also back to its YTD level at #2, while the Toyota Calya (+9.7%) is up six spots on April to close out the podium. The Daihatsu Gran Max Pikap (+6.8%) ensures the Top 4 is entirely in positive. #1 a year ago, the Mitsubishi Xpander (-58%) ranks #5 this month, distancing the Toyota Kijang Innova (-24.8%) also in difficulty. The Daihatsu Sigra (+38.1%), Mitsubishi Pajero Sport (+33.3%) and Honda HR-V (+195.4%) also impress in the remainder of the Top 10. #1 last month and over the Full Year 2021, the Toyota Avanza (-61.7%) implodes to #10 in May. It now ranks #5 year-to-date. Below, the Honda BR-V (+644.7%) and Suzuki Ertiga (+50.6%) stand out. The Hyundai Creta (#18) is the best-selling recent launch above the Toyota Veloz (down 16 spots to #19) and Hyundai Ioniq 5 (#32).
