The Tata Nexon breaks its volume record in May, helping Tata to #2 overall.

Compared to a Covid-affected May 2021, wholesales in India surge 184.6% year-on-year in May to 294,087 units, marking a third straight year-on-year lift. The year-to-date volume frankly tilts into positive as a result at +13.9% and 1,506,067 sales. Brand leader Maruti Suzuki (+278.3%) easily outpaces the market but its share stays slightly below its YTD level at 42.3% vs. 42.7%. As a result Hyundai (+69.2%) is knocked down to #3, likely for the first time in 14 years. Mahindra (+244%) stays in 4th place above an underperforming Kia (+69.4%) while Toyota (+1345%), Skoda (+543%) and Honda (+303%) outrace the market by a large margin thanks to new launches for the former and particularly low year-ago volumes for the latter.

Model-wise, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R (+706%) retains the top spot it holds year-to-date thanks to a fantastic uptick for the month. The Tata Nexon (+127%) trails the market but climbs to a record 2nd place, also delivering an all-time volume record at 14,614. The Maruti Suzuki Swift (+101.8%) rallies back up 9 spots on April to #3 and now ranks #2 year-to-date, passing the Dzire.
