South Africa April 2022: Suzuki Swift up to #2, Renault Kiger in Top 10, sales up 4.3%

The Renault Kiger ranks #9 in South Africa in April.

37,107 new vehicle hit South African roads in April, a 4.3% year-on-year improvement. In the brands ranking, despite being severely impacted by floods in the KwaZulu-Natal region, Toyota remains dominant with 24.1% share but drops from 29.7% in March. The Volkswagen Group gains one percentage point of share on last month to 13.7% and Suzuki gains a whopping 3.4 percentage points, going from 6.6% in March to 10% of the market in April. Hyundai (7.7%) is down one spot to #4 while Renault (6.5%) overtakes Nissan (5.8%) and Kia (5.4% vs. 3.8% last month) passes Ford (5.3%) and Haval (3.8%). Isuzu (2.8%) rounds out the Top 10 like last month.

Model-wise, the Toyota Hilux since again tops the charts but drops to 7.5% share vs. 9% in March. The Suzuki Swift jumps up eight spots on March to finish the month at #2 with 4.4% share, double its March level. The VW Polo Vivo stays at #3 while the Toyota Corolla Cross falls two ranks to #4 and the VW Polo is down one to #5. The Ford Ranger has started to climb back the charts, up six spots on last month to #6 vs. #3 over the Full Year 2021. It distances the Toyota Hiace and Nissan NP200. Meanwhile the Renault Kiger imported from India shoots up 10 ranks on March to #9 and 2.5% share vs. 1.4% last month. The Renault Kwid is up three to #11, the VW T-Cross up 9 to #12, the Haval Jolion, Hyundai Venue and Hyundai Atos are all up three spots to #13, #14 and #15 respectively and the Kia Picanto is up four to #19.
