Portugal April 2022: Citroen C3 #1 for the first time, sales down -16.1%

The Citroen C3 is the best-selling vehicle in Portugal in April.

The Portuguese new car market takes a -16.1% hit in April to 12,420 registrations, however the year-to-date volume remains up at +2.9% and 47,191 units. Peugeot (-29.5%) remains the best-selling brand in the country despite a steep year-on-year fall. In fact the Top 3 carmakers all fit within 27 units, with Toyota (+120.5%) surging ahead at #2 and Citroen (-4.6%) up two spots on March to #3. BMW (-25.9%) follows in great difficulty, distancing a very strong Seat (+17% as opposed to its score in most European markets), while Renault (-56.4%) freefalls at #6. Dacia (+85.5%) generates the 2nd largest gain in the Top 10 below Toyota, with Hyundai (+11.9%) also in positive but Mercedes (-39%) and Volkswagen (-24.6%) both struggling. Outside the Top 10, Cupra (+222.5%), Honda (+182.4%), DS (+47.3%), Kia (+41.2%) and Lexus (+40%) are among the best performers.

Over in the models ranking, the Citroen C3 (-2.9%) takes the top spot for the first time ever, with the Toyota Yaris (+99.3%) and Seat Arona (+61.8%) both posting fantastic results on the podium. Leader last month, the Peugeot 208 (-20.8%) is knocked down to #4 and is now equal #2 with the Citroen C3 year-to-date. The Dacia Duster (+163.3%) continues to evolve at a markedly higher level than last year and ranks #5 for the month and #12 so far this year (+138.6%). The Citroen C3 Aircross (+95.3%), Dacia Sandero (+36.4%) and Seat Ibiza (+7.6%) also report positive scores in the remainder of the Top 10. In contrast the Renault Captur collapses (-69.1%), as does the Peugeot 2008 (-49.9%) which however remains #1 YTD. Notice also the Renault Clio (-57.6%) down 18 spots on April to #21 and down to a paltry 9th place year-to-date vs. #2 over the Full Year 2021. Meanwhile the Toyota Corolla (+160.7%) and Skoda Scala (+655%) ignore the negative environment.
