Ukraine January 2022: Chery up to #3, Renault Duster and Koleos break records in market down -7.2%

Despite the current war in Ukraine, our contact there still managed to find the time to share with us the latest car sales data, a testimony to the kindness, dedication and resilience of this people. In January the Ukrainian new car market dips -7.2% year-on-year to 5,323 units. Renault (+23.8%) swims upstream and repeats at #1 in the brands charts with 17% share vs. 13.1% over the Full Year 2021. Toyota (-39.4%) is hit hard and falls to 11.2% share vs. 14.8% over FY2021 while Chery (+134.8%) climbs up two spots on December to land on the third step of the podium, a new ranking record for the Chinese carmaker in Ukraine. Hyundai (+9.4%) is also very solid and gains two ranks on last month to #4 just as Skoda (-42.4%) freefalls to #5. Volkswagen (+58.2%), Peugeot (+36.3%) and Mitsubishi (+24.8%) also impress in the remainder if the Top 10. Below, Land Rover (+66.7%), Porsche (+61.5%), Opel (+57.8%), Audi (+54.1%) and Citroen (+42.7%) stand out.
Model-wise, the Renault Duster (+77.9%) flies off into the distance with a record 9.7% share, selling over three times more than any other nameplate in the market. The Top 7 best-sellers are all SUVs: the Toyota Prado (-11%) advances two spots on December to #2, the Toyota RAV4 (-64.4%) stays at #3, the Hyundai Tucson (stable) is up 11 ranks on last month to #4, the Nissan X-Trail (+34.4%) is up one to #5, the Renault Koleos (+6000%) is up 63 spots to a record #6 and the Skoda Kodiaq (+3.5%) is up one to #7. The Kia Rio X leaps up 8 spots to land at #8 ahead of the Peugeot 301 (+55.1%) and Chery Tiggo 4 (+165.8%) rounding out the Top 10. Below the Rio X, the best-selling recent launches in Ukraine are the Chery Tiggo 2 Pro (#20), Tiggo 7 Pro (#32) and Toyota Yaris Cross (#35).
