New Caledonia (France) Full Year 2021: Toyota Hilux takes the lead, Chinese up 196.5% in market up 4.1%

New light vehicle sales in New Caledonia, a French archipelago located north east of Australia, gain 4.1% year-on-year in 2021 to 8,235 units. The top three brands all go against the negative trend and post year-on-year drops. Toyota (-5.8%) remains by far the leader with 15.3% share ahead of Dacia (-9.4%) and Peugeot (-2.6%) ensuring a podium unchanged on 2020. Renault (+4.2%) matches the market to overtake Ford (-5.5%) and end the year at #4. Similarly, Hyundai (+9.6%) passes Citroen (-8.5%) to go up to #6 while Nissan (+51.5%), Kia (+18%) and Mitsubishi (+27.5%) close the Top 10 in spectacular fashion. Below, Chinese manufacturers make themselves noticed, as a whole up 196.5% year-on-year to go from 2.9% share in 2020 to 8.2% this year. MG (+116.3%) is up 7 spots to #13, FAW (+79.5%) up 8 to #14, Dongfeng (+1375%) up 16 to #17 and Changan (+141.9%) up 6 to #19, BYD (+3100%) is also up 6 to #31. Newcomers Geely (#31), ZX Auto (#35), Soueast (#38) and Great Wall (#39) bring the total number of Chinese brands present in New Caledonia to 10.

Model-wise, the Toyota Hilux (+17.1%) manages to snap the top spot for the first time since we have started following the New Caledonian market a decade ago. It leads comfortably with almost one percentage point of market share above the Dacia Duster (-9.6%), leader last year. The Ford Ranger (-6.8%) stays in third place while the Dacia Sandero (+11.6%) is up one spot to #4 and the Nissan Navara (+153.7%) storms into the Top 5 at #5 vs. #26 in 2020. As a result the Peugeot 208 (-23.1%) is knocked down two ranks to #6 ahead of the Subaru XV (+7.1%) up one and the Toyota RAV4 (-12.7%) down two. The Mitsubishi Sportero aka L200 (+76.6%) surges to #9, making it four pickups among the 9 best-sellers in 2021. The Citroen C3 (+3.4%) rounds out the Top 10 while almost matching the market. The Hyundai Grand i10 is the best-selling 2021 launch at #23, distancing the Renault Kwid (#26), Renault Oroch (#42) – two models that aren’t sold in Metropolitan France, the Toyota Raize (#45) and Changan CS35 Plus (#46).
