The Vietnamese new vehicle market edges up 2.5% year-on-year in 2021 to 304,149 sales according to VAMA. This figure climbs to 410,390 units (+2.3%) once Hyundai and VinFast are added, as these two manufacturers report separately. Hyundai (-13.3%) remains the most popular carmaker in the country but sees its share lose three percentage points from 20.3% in 2020 to 17.2% this year. Thaco-Kia (+7.6%) overtakes Toyota (-4.5%) to hold the 2nd sappy overall while local outlet VinFast (+54.4%) ends its first full year in market in 4th place – as we predicted a year ago – with 8.7% share. The remainder of the Top 10 is all down, with Mazda (-15.3%) and Honda (-11.1%) hit the hardest while Isuzu (-0.8%), Ford (-3.9%), Suzuki (-5.4%) and Mitsubishi (-5.9%) fare slightly better. Peugeot (+53.1%) and Hino (+44.8%) impress further down.

Model-wise, we have an earthquake in first place: the VinFast Fadil, a rebadged Opel Karl Cross, up 77.4% year-on-year to 5.9% share vs. 3.4% and #5 last year. It is the first time since 2011 and the Kia Morning that it is not a Toyota in the Vietnamese pole position. In fact, the Hyundai Accent (-3.9%) remains in 2nd place which means the Toyota Vios (-34.1%) freefalls to #3. But Toyota may reclaim the top spot as early as this year, with the Toyota Corolla Cross (+211.2%) #4 over the full year but finishing first in both November and December this year. The Kia Seltos (+165.8%) also scores a fantastic result and climbs 12 spots on 2020 to round out the Top 5. The Ford Ranger (+17.7%) stays in 6th place, passing the Mitsubishi Xpander (-19.2%) and Hyundai Grand i10 (-33.2%). Notice also the Honda City (+74.4%), Mitsubishi Attrage (+25.8%) and VinFast Lux 2.0 (+24.4%) further down. Finally, the VinFast VF e34 EV posts its first month of sales in December at 85 units.
