Russia Full Year 2021: Lada Vesta reclaims top spot, Chinese up 102.3%, market up 4.3%

New light vehicle sales in Russia edge up 4.3% year-on-year in 2021 to 1,666,780 units. SUVs account for 47.3% of the market at 788,278 while LCVs hold 7.8% at 130,691, Pickups are at 0.6% and 10,014 and BEVs at just 1,001 sales. The Top 4 carmakers trail the market evolution yet remain in positive. Lada (+2.1%) sees its share thaw slightly from 21.5% to 21%, it is followed like last year by Kia (+2%), Hyundai (+2.5%) and Renault (+2.4%). Toyota (+6.9%) overtakes Skoda (-4.4%) and Volkswagen (-14%) to round out the Top 5 just as GAZ (+10.4%) and BMW (+9.6%) post the largest gains in the Top 10 to rank #8 and #10 respectively.

Just outside the Top 10, Mercedes (+10.8%) manages to contain two thundering Chinese brands: Haval (+125.1%) and Chery (+224.1%). Haval peaked at #8 in November and Chery at #9 in August, with the two carmakers breaking their monthly volume and share records multiple times during the year. Geely for ist part gains 58.9%. All-in-all, Chinese manufacturers are up 102.3% year-on-year in 2021 to 115,700 sales and 6.9% vs. 57,200 and 3.6% in 2020. Other impressive brands include Cheryexeed (+1561.9%), Opel (+253.4%), Genesis (+248.4%), Peugeot (+93.2%), Chevrolet (+87.5%), Cadillac (+66.9%), Citroen (+50.4%) and Ford (+47.5%).

Over in the models ranking, the Lada Vesta (+6%) reclaims the top spot for the first time since 2018 and the second time ever. Still #2 at the end of November, the Vesta toppled the Lada Granta (-11.6%), leader for the past two years, at the last minute. The Kia Rio (-5.8%) and Hyundai Creta (-7.4%) camp on their 2020 rankings at #3 and #4 respectively. The Hyundai Solaris (+23.9%) leaps ahead but gains just one spot at #5, as do the Lada Niva (+4.8%) and GAZ Gazelle (+8.2%), all taking advantage of a particularly weak result by the VW Polo (-19.8%). Its twin the Skoda Rapid PA II on the other hand surges 58.7% to end its first full year in market at #9. Thanks to the new generation, the Renault Duster (+31.1%) breaks into the Top 10 at #10. Other great performers further down include the Toyota Camry (+16.8%), Kia K5 (+259.6%), Ford Transit (+48.5%) and Skoda Karoq (+25.3%).
