After freefalling -42.7% in 2020, new car sales in Croatia rally back up 25.5% year-on-year in 2021 to 45,289 registrations. Brand leaders Volkswagen (+2.6%) and Skoda (-6%) can’t catch up with the growth rate and see their market shares reduced significantly from 15.6% to 12.8% for VW and from 13.5% to 10.1% for Skoda. In contrast Opel (+114.8%) more than doubles its sales year-on-year and leaps up five spots on 2020 to land on the third step of the podium. Kia (+77.4%) and Dacia (+36%) also excel just below. Renault (-6.1%) underperforms while all remaining Top 10 members outrace the market: Hyundai (+64.8%), Toyota (+38.5%), Peugeot (+36.2%) and Suzuki (+32.7%) all post solid scores. Further down, Tesla (+568.6%), Subaru (+109.1%) and Mazda (+107%) show explosive growth while newcomer Cupra lands at #26.

Model-wise, the Opel Corsa (+161.3%) almost triples its sales year-on-year thanks to the new generation, dislodging the leader of the past 4 years, the Skoda Octavia (-22.8%) for just 16 units. The Corsa topped the charts in April, June and July. This is the first time since 2004 that the Corsa is the best-selling vehicle in Croatia and the first time since 2012 an Opel is the #1 vehicle in Croatia. The Dacia Duster (+69.1%) climbs up two spots on 2020 to third place – it was #1 in May, October and December – while the VW T-Cross (+51.1%) is up three to #4. The Dacia Sandero (+24.2%) just misses out on the market growth rate and drops one rank to round out the Top 5. The VW T-Roc (+67.3%) is up 7 spots to #5 and the Hyundai Tucson (+249.8%) secures the most spectacular lift in the Top 20. Other newcomers in this year’s Top 20 are the Opel Crossland at #11, the Peugeot 2008 (+117.1%) at #15, the Suzuki Swift (+137.9%) at #16, Kia Ceed (+131.4%) at #18 and the Renault Twingo (+62.5%) at #20 and #1 in November.
