Germany November 2021: Opel Corsa, VW T-Roc & Renault Zoe on podium, VW Golf #10, market off -31.7%

The Opel Corsa is the best-selling vehicle in Germany in November.

The German new car market is stuck in hell with November sales off another searing -31.7% year-on-year to just 198,258 units, leading to a year-to-date down -8.1% to 2,394,502. We had anticipated a stronger November and therefore we are adjusting our 2021 Forecast down from 2.68 million to 2.64 million (-9%). Both brand leaders Volkswagen (-42.1%) and Mercedes (-37.4%) lose more ground than the market to hit 14.9% and 10.4% share respectively. In third place, BMW (-31.8%) marches the market while Opel (-28.8%) does slightly better and remains at #4 ahead of Skoda (-32.9%) back up three spots on last month to #5. Audi (-44.9%) is stuck in 6th place while Renault (-23.7%) is up two ranks to #7 and Hyundai (-1.1%) remains unaffected by the microchip crisis. Ford (-55.3%) endures the worst fall in the Top 10 while Fiat (-16.9%) resists somewhat at #10. Just below, Tesla shoots up 234.1% year-on-year and 13 ranks on last month to #11. Kia (-0.1%) is stable while Cupra (+179.7%), Polestar (+105.3%), Subaru (+27.2%), Mitsubishi (+17.8%) and Mini (+9.3%) stand out with year-on-year gains. MG appears at #29 with 0.4% share.

The German models ranking has been sent into a spin with the serious production issues affecting the traditional leader the VW Golf. After dropping to #2 last month for the first time in 30 years, the Golf implodes down -69.7% in November to fall to #10 overall, something that has never been seen before in Germany. Instead, the Opel Corsa (-29%) takes the pole position with 2.4% above last month’s leader the VW T-Roc (-17.3%). We have a surprise entrant in third place: the Renault Zoe (-2%), smashing its previous ranking record of #6 hit last December. The VW Up (-3.2%) is up 11 spots on October to land at #4, distancing the Mini lineup (+9.3%) and the Fiat 500 lineup (+3.9%). The Tesla Model 3 (+136.5%) rallies back up 35 ranks on last month to #7 overall – and therefore outsells the VW Golf for the first time, while the Mercedes GLC (-5.4%) is up 16 spots to #8. The VW T-Cross (+10.1%), Kia Ceed (+21%) and Mitsubishi Space Star (+71.2%) also manage year-on-year gains further down.
