Switzerland October 2021: Skoda Enyaq scores first win in the world, market down -28.2%

The Skoda Enyaq is the best-selling vehicle in Switzerland in October.

New car sales in Switzerland drop -28.2% year-on-year in October to 15.060 units, leading to a year-to-date tally up 5.7% to 195.133. HEV+MHEV sales are up 3.4% to 3.743 and 24.9% share vs. 17.3% a year ago, PHEV is up 1.8% to 1.559 and 10.4% and BEV up 46.8% to 2.191 and 14.5% share vs. 7.1% in October 2020. Year-to-date, HEV+MHEV is up 82.6% to 42.568 and 21.8% share vs. 12.6% over the same period in 2020, PHEV is up 81.5% to 17.356 and 8.9% vs. 5.2% and BEV up 78.6% to 22.614 and 11.6% vs. 6.9% last year.

Mercedes (-27.1%) is back up three spots on September to sign its first monthly win since April and third of the year (add January). It distances BMW (-18.7%) by just 44 sales, both carmakers delivering higher shares than year-to-date at 9.8% and 9.5% respectively. Volkswagen (-34.5%) drops to third place with 9.4% share vs. 10.9% so far this year, while Skoda (-30.1%) is up two spots to return to the 4th place it holds year-to-date. Audi (-47.9%) is in difficulty but remains #5, a position it also hold year-to-date. Hyundai (+7.1%) and Toyota (+11.3%) brilliantly score the only two year-on-year gains in the Top 10, Hyundai is rewarded with a Top 10 spot year-to-date. The remainder of the Top 10 all underperform: Renault (-43.9%), Ford (-33.9%) and Volvo (-32.6%) all lose share year-on-year. Further down, Polestar (+491.6%), Aston Martin (+50%), DS (+50%), Lamborghini (+36.4%), Bentley (+25%), Kia (+20.1%), Porsche (+3.7%) and Opel (+0.6%) are among rare gainers.

Over in the models ranking, as always this is a very volatile chart as Switzerland is the most fragmented markets in the world. We have a surprise at the top: the Skoda Enyaq is up five spots on last month to score its first ever monthly win in the world (it ranked #2 twice in the Netherlands this year). Only 2% market share are enough to secure the top spot for the Skoda EV. The Mini Hatch (-9%) is up 23 ranks to #2 and the Fiat 500 is up two to complete the podium. The Mercedes A-Class (-31%) and VW Polo (-30.1%) both struggle year-on-year but shoot up the ranking vs. last month: up 24 spots to #4 and up 10 to #5 respectively. The Volvo XC40 (-19%), BMW X1 (-6.9%) and VW T-Roc (-20.4%) all beat the market while the Skoda Octavia (-50.5%) halves its year-ago volume but remains #1 year-to-date for now. The Skoda Fabia (+9.4%) is the only year-on-year gainer in the Top 10. Among recent launches, below the Enyaq the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is #22, the Mercedes EQA is #43 and the VW ID.4 #45.
