Spain October 2021: Hyundai #1 for the first time, Peugeot 2008 leads in market off -20.5%

The Peugeot 2008 is the best-selling vehicle in Spain in October.

New car sales in Spain lose -20.5% year-on-year in October to 59.044 units, leading to a year-to-date tally up 5.6% to 706.998 registrations but down -33% on the first 10 months of pre-pandemic 2019. Looking at different distribution channels, private sales drop -18.2% to 31.066 and 52.6% share vs. 51.2% a year ago, company sales crumble down -27.3% to 24.249 and 41.1% share vs. 45% in October 2020 and rental sales surge 29.3% to 3.729 and 6.3% vs. 3.9% last year. Year-to-date figures have private sales as the only channel in negative year-on-year at -12% to 296.387 and 41.9% share vs. 50.3% over the same period in 2020, while company sales edge up 6.9% to 265.578 and 37.6% share vs. 37.1% a year ago and rental sales soar 71.6% to 145.033 and 20.5% share vs. 12.6% in 2020.

The brands ranking is completely reshuffled once again this month and we have an all new winner: Hyundai (+57.4%) goes entirely against the negative grain to score its first ever monthly pole position in Spain with a splendid 9.9% share vs. #6 and 6.4% so far this year. Peugeot (-8.7%) resists ok and leaps up two spots on September to #2, a ranking it now also holds year-to-date. Kia (+22.2%) is the only additional year-on-year gainer in the Top 18, hitting 8.9% of the market vs. 6.6% year-to-date. All remaining Top 10 brands bar Citroen (-15.7%) fall faster than the market, with Seat (-53.1%), Dacia (-38.6%), Volkswagen (-38.3%) and Mercedes (-34.3%) hit the hardest while Renault (-25.6%) and Toyota (-25.5%) do marginally better. In spite of its woeful performance this month, Seat retains the YTD lead above Peugeot and Volkswagen. Chinese fare Aiways sells its first unit in Spain this month.

Over in the very volatile models ranking, the Peugeot 2008 (+52%) signs its second ever win in this market after last February thanks to a fantastic year-on-year gain. Spain is the second large European market to crown the 2008 this month so far after France. It is followed by the Hyundai Tucson (+116.8%) doing even better and cementing its #2 spot year-to-date. The Dacia Sandero (-35.9%) takes a hit year-on-year but climbs up two spots on September to #3 while the Peugeot 3008 (-10.8%) rallies back up 32 ranks on last month to #4. The Toyota Corolla (-24.5%) rounds out the Top 5 above the Hyundai i20 (+47.7%) and the Citroen C4 (+1029%) breaking into the Top 10 for the first time for this generation. In the remainder of the Top 10, the Peugeot 208 (+1.1%) nudges up but the Seat Arona (-44.7%) sinks (yet remains #1 year-to-date) and the Nissan Qashqai (-28.4%) awaits the new generation. At #20, the Cupra Formentor (+939.5%) lodges a second incursion inside the Spanish Top 20 after last May (#15).
