Canada October 2021: Lexus (+11.8%), Genesis (+341.2%) defy lowest October in a decade (-17.7%)

Albeit at small volumes, Genesis sales are up 341.2% in October in Canada.

The Canadian new light vehicle market is estimated to fall -17.7% year-on-year in October to 128.419 units according to local consultancy Desrosiers Automotive. Although slightly lower than the -19.6% drop from September, this is the second largest monthly fall this year and the weakest October tally since 2011. The Seasonally Adjusted Annualised Rate of sales is down to a lukewarm 1.57 million. The year-to-date tally now stands at 1.425.031, up 8% on the same period in 2020. As a result of the lingering microchip shortage and production issues, we have shaved our 2021 Canada Forecast down slightly to 1.63 million units (+4.6%).

For now only groups and brands data is available for the manufacturers that still share monthly sales. Hyundai-Kia (-11.5%) resists well and overtakes Toyota Motor (-27.4%) in trouble as is Honda Canada (-27.6%). Looking at brands, Toyota (-31.9%) sells the most despite a drastic fall, while Hyundai (-5.9%) posts the best hold among large carmakers. Honda (-30.4%) skids down as do Kia (-26.1%) and Mazda (-24.6%) but Subaru (-10.5%) holds. The three last (smaller) luxury brands all over perform: Genesis is up a whopping 341.2% year-on-year on the back of its two new SUVs, while Lexus (+11.8%) manages a double-digit progression and Acura (-1.9%) limits its fall greatly.
