Spain August 2021: Sales off -28.9%, Toyota leads for first time, Hyundai up to record #2, Sandero repeats at #1

The new Yaris Cross helps Toyota sign its first ever win in Spain.

New car sales in Spain continue to suffer from the microchip crisis at -28.9% year-on-year in August to just 47.584 units, the lowest August tally since 2013 and exactly the same evolution as July. The year-to-date tally is now up 12.1% to 588.314 units but down -33% on the same period in 2019. We at BSCB forecast a Full Year 2021 tally up just 3% year-on-year to 881.800 units. Private sales drop -30.7% year-on-year to 26.084 units and 54.8% share vs. 56.3% in August 2020, company sales decline -27.1% to 17.673 and 37.1% share vs. 36.2% and rental sales resist better at -23.9% to 3.827 and 8% vs. 7.5% a year ago. Year-to-date, private sales are actually down year-on-year at -9.7% to 236.729 and 40.2% share vs. 50% over the same period in 2020, whereas company sales gain 16.8% to 215.654 and 36.6% share vs. 35.2% and rental sales soar 74.8% to 135.931 and 23.1% share vs. 14.8% a year ago.

In the brands ranking, Toyota (-12.2%) resists to sign its first ever monthly win in Spain with a splendid 8.7% share vs. 7.5% so far this year. The Japanese manufacturer ranks #4 year-to-date and distances Hyundai (-0.2%) stable for the month and also breaking its Spanish ranking record at #2. Kia (-19.3%) remains at a strong third place above Volkswagen (-37%) in dire straits and Seat (-27.9%) roughly matching the market and still #1 year-to-date with 9.1% share. Opel (-2.5%) resists best in the remainder of the Top 10 with Dacia (-16.7%) up three spots on July to #6 and Audi (-20.9%) also outpacing the market and up three ranks to #10. Peugeot (-54.6%) and Renault (-41.9%) struggle. Below, Cupra (+764.8%), Ferrari (+150%), DFSK (+25%), Maserati (+28.6%), Tesla (+22.8%), Ssangyong (+7.4%) and Lexus (+2.7%) post the only additional year-on-year gains in market.

Model-wise, the Dacia Sandero (-1.2%) stabilises its sales to easily repeat at #1 with a stunning 4.5% share, its highest since May 2020 (4.6%). The Sandero climbs from #7 year-to-date as of last month to #3 now. As a reminder, the Sandero topped the annual Spanish charts over the Full Year 2020. The next two models post exceptional gains: the Hyundai Tucson (+48.2%) is back up to the 2nd spot it holds year-to-date while the Opel Corsa (+47.8%) is up three ranks on July to #3 vs. #14 year-to-date. The Toyota Corolla (-1.2%) is up five spots to #4, distancing the Seat Leon (-47.2%) in difficulty. The VW T-Roc (+7.3%) and Hyundai i20 (+21.9%) also manage positive results in the remainder of the Top 10 whereas the Renault Captur (-29.4%), Dacia Duster (-32.1%) and Toyota C-HR (-38.4%) all fall faster than the market. This month we welcome the Toyota Yaris Cross at #52 and the Tesla Model Y at #117.
