Romania August 2021: Dacia Duster breaks share record in market up 44.6%

The Dacia Duster holds a record 14.2% of the Romanian market in August.

New car sales in Romania soar 44.6% year-on-year in August to 16.129 units on a low year-ago comparison base (11.155), leading to a year-to-date tally up 7.6% to 79.311. The Top 3 carmakers vastly outperform the market, starting with homegrown leader Dacia (+67.7%) up to a flamboyant 39.1% share vs. 26.9% so far this year. Hyundai (+121.7%) more than doubles its volume year-on-year to remain in 2nd place ahead of Toyota (+78.1%) up one rank on July to #3 overall. Below, Volkswagen (+10.5%), Renault (+17.5%), Ford (+39.4%) and Skoda (+2.4%) can’t quite keep up with the market growth. Kia (+138.7%), Suzuki (+94.2%) and Peugeot (+46.1%) close out the Top 10 in very dynamic fashion. Further down, notice Ssangyong (+207.7%), Honda (+115.5%), Jeep (+98.7%), Audi (+86.6%) and Mazda (+72.1%) all posting fantastic gains.

Model-wise, the Dacia Logan (+28.1%) trails the market but remains in the lead at 15.1% share vs. 10.5% so far this year. The Dacia Duster (+224%) triples its sales year-on-year to hit its highest ever market share at home at 14.2%, its previous best being 11.6% in April 2020. This is however not enough to snap the top spot off the Logan. Year-to-date, the Duster holds 8.3% share. The Dacia Sandero (+46.7%) is down one spot on July to #3 but shines at 9.1% share vs. 7% year-to-date. The locally-produced Ford Puma (+146.7%) remains the best-selling non-Dacia vehicle in Romania as it is also year-to-date at #4 each time. The next four models all smash the market growth rate and all at least double their sales year-on-year: the VW Polo (+209.8%) distances the Toyota Corolla (+167.5%), Renault Megane (+115.8%) and Hyundai Tucson (+193.5%). The Hyundai Bayon tops recent launches at #49 above the Renault Arkana (#52), Citroen C4 (#63), VW ID.3 (#69) and Opel Mokka (#70).
