Pakistan July 2021: Market up 113.7%, Suzuki Alto #1, Hyundai Sonata lands

The Hyundai Sonata is now produced locally in Pakistan.

According to data released by PAMA, sales of new locally-made light vehicles in Pakistan shoot up 113.7% year-on-year in July to 24.918, sending the year-to-date tally up 125.1% to 126.361. Note Kia also produces locally now, reportedly selling more than Honda but doesn’t report figures to PAMA so it doesn’t appear here. Suzuki (+204.2%) triples its sales year-on-year to catch up on lost time and accounts for a gigantic 60.9% share vs. 51.7% so far this year. Toyota (+66.1%) and Honda (-6.5%) underperform while Hyundai (+850%) soars up thanks to a new locally-produced range composed of the Elantra, Tucson and Sonata, the latter new for this month.

Model-wise, the Suzuki Alto (+183.1%) surges ahead to reclaim the top spot it holds year-to-date, holding 24.5% share vs. 21.8% so far this year. It topples the Suzuki Cultus (+291.2%) up 4-fold year-on-year to 16.9% share vs. 11.2% YTD. The Toyota Yaris (+43.4%) and Corolla (+51.8%) both trail the market significantly whereas the Suzuki Wagon R (+276.5%), Ravi (+217.4%) and Toyota Hilux (+162.8%) all post surreal year-on-year gains. The Hyundai Sonata lands at #15.
