Germany July 2021: Opel (+16%) only gainer in the Top 25, VW T-Roc at record #2 as market skids -24.9%

The VW T-Roc is up to a record 2nd place at home in July.

New car sales in Germany feel the full brunt of the microchip crisis in July as they dive -24.9% year-on-year to just 236.393 units, meaning the year-to-date tally is now up 6.7% to 1.627.282. Volkswagen (-16.6%) resists better than its home market to hold a strong 21.1% share vs. 20.1% so far this year, but its next two followers aren’t that lucky: both Mercedes (-37.6%) back up two spots on June to #2, and BMW (-27.7%) down one to #3, fare poorly this month. Audi (-23.3%) manages to remain just above the market evolution and is down one rank on last month to #4. Opel soars up 16% year-on-year to notch the only gain in the Top 10 and Top 25 for that matter, remaining in 5th place overall ahead of Skoda (-41%) and Ford (-47.8%) both in dire straits. Hyundai (-8.4%) and Fiat (-22.6%) resist in the remainder of the Top 10 whereas Renault (-43.3%) falls hard. Further down, notice Suzuki (-6.5%), Citroen (-9.7%), Toyota (-11.4%) and Mazda (-12.9%) containing their loss. Beyond the Top 25, Land Rover (+2.6%), Tesla (+140.9%), Polestar (+6066.7%), Man (+77.8%), Maserati (+25%) and Cadillac (+2200%) sport the only additional year-on-year gains in market.

Model-wise, Volkswagen monopolises the Top 4 again as it does year-to-date but with different models. The Golf (-39.8%) remains the best-seller at home despite a ghastly fall while the T-Roc (-11.2%) breaks its ranking record to end the month in a splendid 2nd place with 2.5% share, up one spot on June. The VW Polo (-8.4%) is back up 7 ranks on last month to #3 while the VW Tiguan (-32.1%) is down two to #4. The BMW 3 Series (-26%) is up three spots to #5 ahead of the Mini lineup (-27.9%) and the VW Up (+53.6%) lifted by its BEV variant. The VW T-Cross (+10%) breaks into its home Top 10 for the very first time at #10. The Opel Mokka is up 14 ranks on June to lift to #13, by far the most successful recent launch in Germany above the Cupra Formentor (#49), Skoda Enyaq (#66), VW ID.4 (#74) and the Hyundai Ioniq5 (#88) breaking into the Top 100 for the first time.
