Spain June 2021: Fiat 500 #1 for the first time, Toyota, VW T-Cross and T-Roc break records

The Fiat 500 is the best-selling vehicle in Spain in June.

The Spanish new car market is up 17.1% year-on-year in June to 96.785 units, leading to a year-to-date tally up 34.4% to 456.833. However when compared to pre-pandemic levels of two years ago in June 2019, the market is down -25.8% and -34% year-to-date. Private sales buck the positive trend in June at a dramatic -18.9% to 36.269 and 37.5% share vs. 54.1% a year ago in June 2020, they are up just 7.6% year-to-date to 174.993 and 38.3% share vs. 47.9% over the same period in 2020. The government is reducing the registration tax in July to try and boost private sales in Spain. Company sales gain 11.5% in June to 31.347 and 32.4% share vs. 34% a year ago and beat the market year-to-date at +39.7% to 167.755 and 36.7% share vs. 35.3% in 2020. In fact it’s rental sales that are mainly responsible for the market uptick this month with sales shooting up 196.3% year-on-year to 29.169 and 30.1% share in June vs. 11.9% a year ago as rental companies are gearing up for the summer touristic season as opposed to last year when travel restrictions were still in place. Rental sales are up 99.7% year-to-date to 114.085 and 25% share vs. 16.8% in 2020. Petrol sales account for 46.2% of the market in June and 48% year-to-date, diesel is at 18.2% and 21% respectively and alternative fuels at 35.6% and 31.1%.

In the brands ranking, Volkswagen (+13.4%) trails the market but scores its first monthly win of the year at 9.1% share vs. 8% so far in 2021. The German carmaker however remains #3 year-to-date. Toyota (+54%) registers a fantastic month and ranks at a record #2 also hit in March 2020, breaking its market share record at 8.5% (previous best was 8.4% in March 2020 and January 2021). The traditional leader, Seat (+19.6%) is relegated to third place at 7.8% share vs. 9.2% year-to-date. Kia (+72%) is up to #4 for the first time since August 2020 and delivers the largest year-on-year gain in the Top 10, with Fiat (+53.9%) and Hyundai (+44.3%) also in outstanding shape. Further down, Tesla (+840.3%), Cupra (+786.3%), Subaru (+103.3%), Skoda (+57.7%), Lexus (+41.8%), Mazda (+43.1%) and BMW (+32.4%) shine. We welcome Chinese carmaker Lynk & Co at #38 with 18 sales of its 01.

We have a surprise leader in the models ranking: the Fiat 500 (+118%) is the best-selling vehicle in the country for the first time ever with 3.1% share, beating a previous best of #2 hit in May 2018. As a result the 500 climbs from #13 to #4 year-to-date. No doubt this performance has a lot to do with rental sales in the lead-up to summer. Leader year-to-date, the Seat Arona (+118.5%) dips to #2 but still manages a solid score at 2.8% share, the same level as YTD. Volkswagen places two models in the Top 4 and they both break their ranking record for the 2nd consecutive month: the T-Cross (+92.3%) surges to #3 overall while the T-Roc (+33.8%) is up to #4. The Toyota C-HR (+116.8%) scores its 2nd highest ever ranking at #5 (best is #4 in November 2019) and the Toyota Yaris (+100.6%) is up 11 spots on April to #6. The Hyundai Tucson (+58%), Toyota Corolla (+34.1%) and Citroen C3 (+21.5%) also beat the market in the remainder of the Top 10. The Citroen C4 (#30) leads recent launches above the Cupra Formentor (#45) and Renault Arkana (#59) however they are all down on April.

Previous month: Spain May 2021: Seat Arona repeats at #1 in market down -24% on two years ago

One year ago: Spain June 2020: Sales off another -36.7%, Renault Captur, VW T-Roc break ranking records
