Romania June 2021: Dacia (-15.3%) can’t keep up with market up 16.6%

The arrival of the Spring isn’t enough to prevent Dacia’s fall at home this month.

The Romanian new car market is back up 16.6% year-on-year in June to 11.853 units, but the year-to-date tally remains down at -3.9% and 47.689 sales. Local leader Dacia (-15.3%) is cut off from the market recovery but still signs a market share superior to its year-to-date level at 25.7% vs. 21.8%. Renault (+20.4%) climbs to 2nd place, unsettling Skoda (+59.3%) while the next four carmakers all outpace the market: Suzuki (+117.9%) and Ford (+67.3%) are the most impressive, followed by Volkswagen (+42.9%) and Toyota (+29.4%). BMW (+158.4%) and Mercedes (+37.9%) also shine in the remainder of the Top 10 while further down, Audi (+228.1%), Volvo (+148.6%), Mazda (+108.6%) and Seat (+106.5%) stand out. Among smaller brands, Mini (+833.3%) and Ssangyong (+238.5%) make waves while Cupra remains at #29 with just 0.1% share. Chinese Skywell (aka Skyworth) makes its first appearance in any ranking outside China with 1 units of its ET5 SUV sold this month.

Model-wise, the Dacia Logan (-21.1%) remains the overall best-seller at home but endures a steep fall, the same going for the Dacia Sandero (-18.6%) albeit up one spot on May to #2. The Dacia Duster (-2.4%) resists better but falls one rank to #3. The locally-made Ford Puma (+198.7%) triples its sales year-on-year to become the best-selling non-Dacia for the month, distancing a Skoda Octavia (+223.7%) in equally good shape. The Renault Captur (+236.7%), Suzuki Vitara (+138.1%), Hyundai Tucson (+119.7%) and to a lesser extent the Toyota Corolla (+46.9%) also perform greatly this month. The China-made Dacia Spring EV appears in the Romanian charts for the first time at #46 which is not enough to reverse Dacia’s fortunes this month but still the best-selling recent launch above the Citroen C4 (#63) and VW ID.4 (#78).

Previous month: Romania May 2021: Skoda (+77.9%), Renault (+51.5%) outpace market up just 14.9%

One year ago: Romania June 2020: Toyota (+16.9%), Ford Puma (#12) ignore market down -27.8%
